Two more British citizens have been found unconscious after being exposed to the nerve agent Novichok. According to British police they had come into contact with a "contaminated object". Journalists speculate on whether the object was a left-over from the Skripal case or whether the Russian - or British - secret service had a hand in the poisoning.

German Interior Minister Seehofer (CSU) has paid a visit to Austrian Chancellor Kurz in a bid to push through his plans for stopping asylum seekers on the German border. Kurz, however, has rejected the idea that refugees to whom the Dublin Regulation applies should be sent back to Austria. The politics of national egotisms have reached their limit, media in both countries comment gleefully.

The leaders of Romania's two ruling parties Liviu Dragnea (PSD) and Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu (Alde) have announced that they will decide by Monday whether to launch impeachment proceedings against President Klaus Iohannis. The latter is blocking a series of highly controversial changes to the penal code which Dragnea is pushing for and which would hamper the fight against corruption. KYIV, 6 July 2018 – The Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in Ukraine and the Trilateral Contact Group, Martin Sajdik, and the Chief Monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM), Ertugrul Apakan, today welcomed the reduction in the number of ceasefire violations that has occurred since recommitment to the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, which came into effect shortly after midnight on 1 July 2018.

“This recommitment needs to be matched by a concrete set of actions if the ceasefire is to hold in a meaningful and sustained manner, namely the withdrawal of heavy weapons, disengagement, and de-mining,” saidAmbassador Sajdik.

Chief Monitor Ambassador Apakan said: “Full commitment to the implementation of the Minsk agreements ensures that the population in eastern Ukraine is able to live in peace and stability. It is high time for the civilian population to be able to go about their everyday lives.”

BERN - Total 780 Tonnen Spargeln haben Schweizer Gemüsebauern in dieser Saison gestochen. Beim weissen Spargel waren es 460 Tonnen. Das ist ein absoluter Rekord.

Anfangs Saison sah es noch schlecht aus: Der sensiblen Spargel war der Boden zu kalt. Die Schweizer Gemüseproduzenten rechneten mit dem Schlimmsten. Jetzt ziehen sie dennoch ein überraschend positives Fazit: Sie haben in diesem Jahr rund 780 Tonnen Spargeln gestochen. Das waren zwar etwas weniger als im Vorjahr, aber rund fünf Prozent mehr als im Durchschnitt der letzten fünf Jahre.

Bei den weissen Spargeln ist mit 460 Tonnen gemäss der Zentralstelle für Gemüsebau sogar ein Rekord verzeichnet worden, wie der Landwirtschaftliche Informationsdienst (LID) bekannt gab. Bei den grünen Spargeln fiel die Ernte mit 320 Tonnen rund zehn Prozent kleiner aus als im Vorjahr.

Spargeln sind förmlich explodiert

Florian Sandrini zeigte sich laut LID als Vertreter der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Spargelmarkt zufrieden mit der diesjährigen Spargelsaison. Nach den tiefen Temperaturen im Februar und März seien die Spargeln mit dem wärmeren Wetter förmlich explodiert.

Die grossen Mengen seien zum richtigen Zeitpunkt gekommen, als der Appetit der Konsumenten auf Spargeln gross gewesen sei. Einen Preiszerfall wie in Deutschland, wo der Absatz der Grossernte harzte, habe es in der Schweiz nicht gegeben.

Anbaufläche mehr als verdoppelt

Die Schweizer Gemüseproduzenten haben in den letzten Jahren die Spargelproduktion stark ausgebaut. Die Anbaufläche hat sich seit 2007 mit 390 Hektaren im letzten Jahr mehr als verdoppelt.

Dennoch deckt die einheimische Produktion nur gerade rund sieben Prozent des Bedarfs ab. Von den 11'000 Tonnen, die letztes Jahr verkauft wurden, stammten lediglich 800 Tonnen von hiesigen Äckern. Der jährliche Pro-Kopf-Konsum liegt bei 1,4 Kilogramm. (pbe/SDA)
