Political crises and violent protests rocked a number of countries in August, including Guatemala, Nepal, Lebanon and Iraq, where popular unrest threatens to topple the government and overturn the post-2003 political order. Deadly conflict worsened in Yemen, Afghanistan and Kashmir, while violence increased in Burundi following President Nkurunziza’s successful run for a third term, and instability remained the norm in the Central African Republic where UN peacekeeping efforts faced a series of setbacks. A border crisis also prompted a dangerous spike in tensions between Colombia and Venezuela. On a positive note, August saw a peace agreement in South Sudan, strengthened prospects for political and constitutional reform in Sri Lanka, and an important political agreement ahead of October elections in Guinea.

Le président sud-africain Jacob Zuma a échappé à une motion de censure, la deuxième cette année. La motion a été rejetée par 211 députés contre et 100 pour, le parti au pouvoir étant largement majoritaire au Parlement. Le principal parti d'opposition, l’Alliance démocratique, réclamait la destitution du chef de l’Etat, qu’il accuse d'avoir sciemment laissé le président soudanais Omar el-Béchir échapper à la justice sud-africaine lors de sa venue pour le sommet de l’Union africaine, en juin dernier.

Hiába hozták hírbe előbb a Ferrarival, hiába jelentette ki róla nyíltan a jövőre debütáló Haas-istálló, hogy igen előkelő helyen szerepel kívánságlistáján, s hiába röppentek fel olyan pletykák, melyek szerint akár még a hamarosan gyári Renault-vá vedlő Lotusnál is lehet esélye, az F1-es pályafutása során már sokat vándorló Nico Hülkenberg végül úgy döntött, marad, ahol van: a Force Indiánál. A csapat kedden hivatalos bejelentést tett szerződéshosszabbításukról, s az is kiderült, hogy az idén Le Mans-ban nagy sikert arató versenyző nem egy, hanem további két évvel hosszabbította meg kontraktusát, azaz 2017-ig elkötelezte magát az indiai csapatnál.

„Örömmel jelentem be, hogy véglegesítettük a jövőre vonatkozó terveimet. Jól ismerem ezt a csapatot, és otthon érzem magam náluk, ezért logikus lépés volt hosszú távra elkötelezni magam feléjük” – nyilatkozta Hülkenberg. „A csapat elmúlt két évben mutatott fejlődése lenyűgözött, és magabiztossá tesz a jövő kapcsán is. Nagyszerű emberekből álló társaság ez, akik éhesek a sikerre, és évről évre javítani akarnak. Szerintem minden lényeges dolog adott az előrelépésünkhöz, a csapat fejlődéséhez és ahhoz, hogy még előrébb lépdeljünk a rajtrácson.”

Hülkenberg 2011-ben került kapcsolatba a Force Indiával, amikor a williamses debütáló éve után tesztversenyzőként alkalmazta őt Vijay Mallya gárdája. 2012-t az indiaiaknál versenyezte végig, majd egyéves kitérőt tett a Sauberhez, ahonnan aztán 2014-ben tért vissza a silverstone-iakhoz. A Force India színeiben eddig összesen 50 nagydíjhétvégét teljesített, 30 alkalommal szerzett pontot velük, s legjobb eredményüket a 2012-es Belga Nagydíjon elért 4. helyezés jelentette.

„Sosem titkoltam, hogy mennyire nagy rajongója vagyok Nicónak, szóval fantasztikus érzés, hogy bejelenthetem, ő marad az egyik versenyzőnk a következő két évben” – nyilatkozta a hosszabbítás kapcsán a csapat többségi tulajdonosa és vezetője, Vijay Mallya. „Nico gyors, technikailag képzett, érett, és segíthet nekünk a nagy dolgok elérésében az elkövetkező években. Mindent megteszünk azért, hogy olyan autót biztosítsunk számára, amely méltó a tehetségéehez.”

Good afternoon. Let me begin by thanking Prime Minister Milanović for his hospitality and welcoming me in Zagreb. Today, we had a very fruitful discussion about the policy challenges facing Europe in the coming months.

We talked at length about the ongoing migration crisis. We had a good exchange on what the European Union is already doing and how we can better and more effectively target our efforts. Especially on how to support front-line EU countries under the greatest migratory pressure. In two weeks the European Union's justice and home affairs ministers will meet in an emergency council to assess the situation on the ground and discuss the next steps. This will include Frontex, the EU border agency, the European Asylum Office, more work on our return policy, international cooperation as well as how to fight and prevent the trafficking and smuggling of migrants. Migration will also be on the agenda of the European Council in October. And later this autumn, European and African leaders will meet in Valletta to discuss cooperation with the countries of transit and origin. Likewise is a high-level conference on migration routes in the Western Balkans being organised. Migration is a shared European challenge, and therefore we need a common European answer in a spirit of unity, solidarity, and responsibility.

The migration crisis is not Europe's fault, but we need to do more at European level to respond. I look forward to Croatia's constructive collaboration, as we implement a European response.

We have gone through the agenda of the October European Council and discussed the economic situation and Greece, as well as the UK's future in the EU. In the next months we will need to take further steps to strengthen our Economic and Monetary Union. The 5 Presidents' Report has given a new impetus to the debate. We might  have an opportunity to come back to this issue in October. In Greece, irrespective of the political situation, it is imperative that the new programme is implemented as agreed. As for the UK, we should consider British concerns, but only in a way which will be safe for all of Europe. We will come back to this in December.

We also discussed the situation in the Western Balkans and how the European Union can help the countries in the region on their path to greater stability and prosperity. I firmly believe that the enlargement perspective is still our strongest leverage to promote reforms and EU values. We will continue to do all we can to help the countries of the region on their European path. History has taught us that a stable Balkan is not only good for the people here in the Balkans but for all of Europe. Thank you.
