The Subcommittee on Security and Defence continue to follow closely Russia's military aggression in Ukraine and wider regional instability, including in the Western Balkans. The committee will debate with Commissioner Thierry Breton on the Defence Package relevant to the Strategic Compass, on 16 March. On 17 March, the members will exchange views on the current situation in Ukraine with Oleksii Reznikov, Minister of Defence of Ukraine.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities.

Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) will take place on 16 and March 2022.

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold an exchange of views on prospects for the EU's future engagement in Mali, on 3 March. Among the speakers will be Mr Charles Fries, Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS, Vice-Admiral Hervé Bléjean, Director General of the EU Military Staff, and Francisco Esteban Perez, Director of Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability. The debate will also focus on the revision of the mandates of the CSDP missions EUTM Mali and EUCAP Sahel Mali.
