SEDE organises a public hearing on 'The future of European Defence after the collapse of Afghanistan and Russia war against Ukraine: next steps in achieving the European Defence Union' on Tuesday, 17 May 2022 from 9.00 to 10.30hrs in room SPAAK 5B1 and remotely, with external experts.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities.

Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) is scheduled to take place on 17 May 2022.

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence and the Committee on Foreign Affairs will exchange views with Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on 10 May. In the context of Russian war against Ukraine, the debate will focus on measures taken by the IAEA to reduce risks of nuclear accident with potentially severe consequences. Another discussion topic will be the recent agreement concluded between the IAEA and Iran.

On 25 March, SEDE Members will exchange views with Chris Peeters, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, on the EIB's Strategic European Security Initiative, aimed at supporting, via financing of up to 6 billion, dual-use projects seeking to develop security and defence systems in Europe in areas such as cybersecurity, emerging and disruptive technologies, space technologies or artificial intelligence. At the same time, the eligibility criteria for financing have not been modified, excluding investments in the armament sector and all purely military investments. In the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the debate will focus on possibilities for the EIB to support access to financing for the European defence industry, drawing on priorities included in the Strategic Compass.
