EU lawmakers voted on Tuesday (May 9) to speed up the legislative process and adopt a law aiming to boost ammunition production in Europe to the tune of €500 million, in order to supply Ukraine.

Addressing the EU lawmakers on Tuesday (9 May), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the need to reform the bloc, particularly if it wants to continue enlarging, and strengthen the European Commission's ability to bring member states to court over rule of law violations.

A delegation of AFET Members travelled to Banjul in The Gambia and to Dakar in Senegal from 3 to 7 April. The main goal of the mission was to contribute to further strengthening the partnerships with these countries. Members met with government and parliament officials as well as with representative of civil society to discuss global and regional security issues.
The visit to Senegal presented a timely opportunity to closely engage with a historical partner and symbol of stability in West Africa. The visit to the Gambia enabled MEPs to better understand the opportunities and shortcomings the Gambia faces in its democratic consolidation and reinforce the EU support for important reforms, as a prerequisite for the future development of the country.

Georgia has implemented 80% of the European Commission's recommendations to earn EU candidate status, the country's Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili told EURACTIV, as Tbilisi races to convince it to progress to the next steps in the bloc's accession process.

Unlike Ukraine and Moldova, Georgia missed out on receiving EU candidate status last June and were instead granted the European “perspective” and given a list of 12 priorities to develop and implement in terms of domestic reforms. With an oral assessment of progress by the EU executive expected by June, EURACTIV looks at Georgia's prospect of receiving EU candidate status in the near future.
