During yesterday's meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council the outcome of the European Council on EU Turkey cooperation was welcomed. It helps both to curb the migration influx and to prevent people from putting their lives in the hands of ruthless smugglers.

The European Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) will meet in Brussels on 10 and 11 March for the fourth JHA Council of the Netherlands Presidency. An important item on the agenda is the proposed establishment of a European border and coast guard agency, which would help enhance the management of Europe’s external borders.

Réuni le 10 mars, le Conseil Justice et Affaires intérieures a salué les résultats du Conseil européen sur la coopération avec la Turquie, qui vont permettre à la fois de maîtriser le flux migratoire et d’éviter que des candidats au départ ne remettent leur vie entre les mains de passeurs sans vergogne.

Les criminels disparaissent souvent avec leur argent au-delà des frontières. Cela rend capitale la coopération policière au niveau européen. La conférence du Collège européen de police (CEPOL), qui se tiendra le 14 mars, sera consacrée aux enquêtes financières.

Criminals often disappear across borders, along with their money. Cooperation between European police forces is therefore vital. The European Police College (CEPOL) conference on 14 March will focus on cross-border financial investigation.

Continuité, pertinence et impact. C’est par ces trois mots-clés que Michael O’Flaherty, nouveau directeur de l’Agence des droits fondamentaux, a résumé le 8 mars ses priorités pour le Groupe de travail sur les droits fondamentaux (FREMP).

Continuity, relevance and impact: according to Michael O’Flaherty, the new director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), these are the priorities of the FRA presented in the Council Working Party on Fundamental Rights, Citizens Rights and Free Movement of Persons (FREMP). Mr O’Flaherty was speaking on 8 March, at the first meeting of the Working Party to be held during the Netherlands Presidency.
