Debate: Consequences of the migration debate in Europe?

In the wake of the Ceuta crisis, migration policy is once again at the top of the agenda among Europe's political leaders. The prime ministers of Italy and Denmark, Giorgia Meloni and Mette Frederiksen, have now issued a joint statement warning of the consequences of uncontrolled migration and calling for a tougher stance. At the same time, however, Europe's media point to new rifts over how to deal with migrants.

Russia's Supreme Court has barred the Yabloko party from standing in September's parliamentary elections, on the grounds of alleged breaches of electoral law. Yabloko is pushing for an immediate end to Russia's war against Ukraine. Many opposition figures recently called on the population to vote for the party, which has not had a parliamentary group in the Duma since 2003.

Debate: What does the new Sunni military pact portend?

Amid ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a defence pact in Mecca on Friday. An armed attack on any of the member states would be regarded as an attack on all, according to statements. Following the signing of the document, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended Friday prayers together.

Missions - SEDE mission to Ukraine - 5-6 February 2026 - 05-02-2026 - Committee on Security and Defence

A five-member delegation from the SEDE Committee was in Kyiv on 5 and 6 February 2026. The aim of this mission was to convey European Parliament's unwavering support to Ukraine and to listen to Ukrainian military needs for achieving peace through strength and defend itself against Russia’s war of aggression. High-level political meetings with Rada, Ministries, President's Office, Mayor of Kyiv, anti-corruption institutions, civil society representatives and defence industry were held.

Missions - SEDE delegation visit to EUNAVFOR Operation ASPIDES and Djibouti - 27-29 October 2025 - 26-10-2025 - Committee on Security and Defence

The SEDE delegation’s mission to Djibouti and in particular to the EU's CSDP Operation "EUNAVFOR ASPIDES" provided a timely opportunity to assess the operational realities, strategic relevance and regional context of the EU’s maritime presence in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. The mission also offered an opportunity to examine the broader EU and Member State presence in Djibouti, including its political partnerships, military infrastructure and operational support functions.
