Press briefing ahead the European Council of 24 and 25 March 2022

The President of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe, has sent a letter to the President of the Euro Summit, Charles Michel, taking stock of the economic situation and fiscal policy in light of recent developments, in particular Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The letter will inform the discussion that leaders will hold at the Euro Summit of 25 March 2022.

On 21 March 2022, the Council approved conclusions Cameroon.

The Council adopted a decision extending the framework for restrictive measures in view of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina until 31 March 2024.

A status agreement will allow Frontex to assist Moldova in border management, through the deployment of teams which can support Moldovan authorities in tasks such as registration and border checks.

Environment ministers endorsed the Council’s mandate to negotiate an agreement with the European Parliament on a regulation that aims to further restrict the presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in waste. The negotiating mandate was formally approved by the Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper) on Friday 11 March.

Member states adopt their negotiating position on batteries and waste batteries in view of starting trilogue negotiations with the European Parliament. New rules will make batteries safer and more sustainable and harmonise rules on the internal market.

EU ambassadors agreed the Council’s negotiating mandate on a proposal to amend the 2014-2020 home affairs funds and 2021-2027 asylum, migration and integration fund.
