During the week of 12 May 2025, European Council President António Costa will travel to the Western Balkans to meet with the political leadership and co-host the sixth European Political Community Summit in Tirana.

European Council President António Costa took part in the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration in Luxembourg. In his statement, he recalled the historical significance of Schuman’s vision for peace and European unity, stressing the need for renewed efforts in the face of current challenges, notably the war in Ukraine.

Jahrestags der Schuman-Erklärung gaben die Präsidentin des Europäischen Parlaments, der Präsident des Europäischen Rates und die Präsidentin der Europäischen Kommission eine gemeinsame Erklärung ab, in der sie ihr Engagement für das europäische Projekt und seine Grundwerte Frieden, Einheit und geteilte Souveränität bekräftigten. Vor dem Hintergrund globaler Herausforderungen wie des Kriegs Russlands gegen die Ukraine und des Klimawandels verpflichteten sich die Führungsspitzen der EU, Europas Sicherheit, Wohlstand und Rolle als verlässlicher Partner weltweit zu stärken.

Der Präsident des Europäischen Rates António Costa traf am 9. Mai 2025 mit dem neu gewählten deutschen Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz zusammen. Auf einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz gratulierte er dem Kanzler zu seiner Wahl und betonte die Schlüsselrolle Deutschlands im Hinblick auf eine stärkere und wettbewerbsfähigere EU.

Der Rat hat die restriktiven Maßnahmen gegen die Verantwortlichen für Handlungen, die die territoriale Unversehrtheit, Souveränität und Unabhängigkeit der Ukraine untergraben oder bedrohen, um weitere sechs Monate, d. h. bis zum 15. September 2025, verlängert.

Der Rat hat sein Verhandlungsmandat zu Zöllen auf die verbleibenden Agrarerzeugnisse und Düngemittel aus Russland und Belarus angenommen.
