During the next meeting on 2 June, Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on a draft resolution on the EU and the defence of multilateralism. They will also hold exchange of views on the Global Gateway Strategy, aiming to boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport across the world and has the potential to become an important foreign policy tool.

This study provides Members of the European Parliament and other interested stakeholders with an independent evaluation of the likely economic, social and environmental impacts from the 10 Flagship projects of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans (EIP), adopted by the European Commission on 6 October 2020. On the basis of a tailor-made methodology, the EIP projects’ impact is assessed according to their relevance, effectiveness and efficiency, as well as their synergies and coherence with the wider aims of the EIP and EU enlargement policy. The study identifies the novel aspects of these Flagship projects and considers lessons learned from previous EU and international assistance. Finally, the study evaluates the projects’ overall economic, social and environmental impacts as well as their transversal implications in the Western Balkans. In the concluding section, potential obstacles to successful implementation are identified and some recommendations are proposed on ways to improve the EIP’s developmental impact, thereby ensuring effective strategic guidance and scrutiny by the European Parliament.

During the meeting on 11 and 12 May, Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee exchanged views with Pekka Haavisto, Foreign Minister of Finland, on Finland's foreign and security policy in the light of the war in Ukraine and with Fawzia Abdulla Yusuf Zainal, Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Bahrain.
They also debated the state of play on the envisaged Association Agreements with Mexico, Mercosur and Chile and held a presentation of a study on "The Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans: Assessing the possible economic, social and environmental impact of the proposed Flagship projects".
During the voting session the committee Members have voted on the Recommendation on the EU's Foreign, Security and Defence Policy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as on draft reports on Montenegro and Turkey and an opinion on the future European Financial Architecture for Development.

During its meeting on 20 and 21 April the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold an exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine and the implications of the Russian invasion on the EU Foreign, Security and Defence Policy.
AFET Members will also discuss the EU strategy on Central Asia and the Draft Recommendation on the Horn of Africa.
Finally, enlargement will also feature during the next AFET meeting, as Members will vote on the 2021 Reports on Albania and North Macedonia and discuss the Draft Reports on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia.
