Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET) - Europäisches Parlament

The ING2 Special Committee will hold a hearing on Thursday 27 October from 14.30 to 16.30 on "Russian interference in the European Union: the distinct cases of Hungary and Spain". Members will exchange views with experts about interference from Russia in the European Union, looking specifically at two cases: Hungary and Spain.
Hungary and Spain have experienced situations where the Kremlin attempted to influence democratic processes through a coordinated approach, making use of different tools, aiming at influencing the public opinion and sowing chaos by fanning the flames of separatism. The hearing will dive deeper in the Kremlin's tactics and its use of proxies within the EU. Invited experts are:

A delegation of AFET Members traveled to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan from 18 to 22 July 2022. The main purpose of the mission was to assess the security situation in the South Caucasus and the implications of Georgia’s application to join the EU. Moreover, the mission took stock of the situation following the 2020 war in and around Nagorno Karabakh and explored possible pathways towards a permanent peace deal.
The mission assessed the new geopolitical dynamics of the area in light of the increasingly active involvement of regional powers such as Russia, Turkey and Iran.

On 8 November 2022, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on International Trade will hold a hearing on Foreign policy and trade aspects of the EU's strategic autonomy.
Susi Dennison, European Council on Foreign Relations, and Hugo Meijer, Sciences Po, Center for International Studies, will explore how the EU can best develop its sovereignty to promote and defend its values and strengthen multilateralism globally in the context of geopolitical shifts (AFET panel). Professor Hoekman, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, and Professor Clausen, University of Miami School of Law, will then examine different paradigms for working strategically with trade partners to improve EU's resilience and for ensuring that its economic and greater political goals are achieved and safeguarded from unfair trade practices ("open" strategic autonomy - INTA panel).

A delegation of AFET Members traveled to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and Khartoum in Sudan from 20 to 22 September. The main purpose of the mission was to follow-up on the EU-African Union Summit held in February 2022, the Recommendation on the EU’s strategic relationship and partnership with the Horn of Africa (adopted in AFET in July) and to engage further with the African Union.
Members held meetings with the representatives of the Government of Ethiopia, authorities and civil society to discuss the situation of the armed conflict in the country and matters related to global and regional security. In Sudan Members sought to support the Sudanese people in their struggle for democracy and make pressure on the regime to return to the transition process towards democracy. Members of the Committee on Development and Women's Rights and Gender Equality joined for parts of the programme.
