Highlights - Focus on EU-Western Balkans Summit and Covid-19 pandemic - Committee on Foreign Affairs

A day following the EU-Western Balkans Summit videoconference of 6 May 2020, Foreign Affairs MEPs will quiz Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on the outcomes of the summit and the EU support to the accession countries in tackling COVID-19.
Members will follow up on the recently adopted AFET recommendations on enhancing engagement with the Western Balkans and will scrutinise the unprecedented EU
assistance to the region to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

"In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

On 2 April, the Conference of Presidents updated the EP's calendar of activities to introduce an extraordinary plenary session on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April in Brussels, and additional dates for remote meetings for EP governing bodies, committees and political groups.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next AFET Committee meeting will take place on 30 April, 7 May and 19 May (via videoconference).

Highlights - Disinformation around the COVID-19 pandemic - EEAS Special Report - Committee on Foreign Affairs

On 30 April, the Committee onf Foreign Affairs will discuss with the Vice-President of the European Commission/ High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell the latest report by the European External Action Service about disinformation around COVID-19 pandemic.
The discussion will be an opportunity for MEPs to get more insight into the proliferation of disinformation activities related to Coronavirus around the world and in particular those targeting the EU and its wider neighbourhood.

Highlights - Exchange of views with VP/HR Borrell on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic - Committee on Foreign Affairs

On 20 April, the Committee onf Foreign Affairs in association with the sub-committees on human rights (DROI) and security and defence (SEDE) will discuss with the Vice-President of the European Commission/ High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for foreign affairs and geopolitical situation.
The discussion will follow the Joint Communication on the Global EU response to COVID-19 focusing on the EU role in combating the coronavirus crises on the international scene. It will address the measures and actions taken by the EU and its Member States in third countries, and particularly the countries in the EU's immediate neighbourhood. The discussion will also focus on the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020- 2024 due to be adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council.
