"In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Following these decisions, the next ordinary AFET Committee meetings will take place on 04, 22-23 February (via videoconference).

The AFET and INTA committees will hold a meeting under the joint committee procedure on 4 February, with all opinion-giving committees invited to present their positions on the draft EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
This will be followed by another joint AFET-INTA committee meeting on 5 February, where the co-rapporteurs, Ms Kati PIRI (AFET, S&D, NL) and Mr Christophe HANSEN (INTA, EPP, LU), will present their draft recommendation for consent.

On 26 January, AFET will debate external policy priorities with Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal. The Minister and MEPs will discuss the upcoming challenges and possible solutions, as Portugal takes over the rotating presidency of the Council in a very important moment for the European Union.
During this Presidency, the future EU-UK relations as well as the pursing closer dialogue and cooperation with Latin American and Asian partners will be high on the agenda in addition to the Enlargement, Eastern and Southern neighbourhood, Africa and transatlantic relations. At the same time the EU will continue the fight with the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects not only in the Member States, but also in cooperation with and providing assistance to its external partners.
