The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will discuss the current and unfolding global security challenges in a rapidly changing geo-strategic environment, together with EEAS, NATO and UN representatives. The debate is set to focus on, amongst other things, addressing increasingly cross-border and hybrid security challenges and on contributing to peace and security in the EU and worldwide by means of an enhanced EU-NATO and EU-UN cooperation. The meeting will take place on 9 September 2019.

At its constitutive meeting of 15 July Nathalie Loiseau (RENEW, FR) was elected as Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) for the forthcoming two and a half years. The elected Vice-Chairs of the SEDE Committee are:
Nikos Androulakis (S-D, EL) as 1st Vice-Chair, Kinga Gál (EPP, HU) as 2nd Vice-Chair, Özlem Demirel (GUE/NGL, DE) as 3rd Vice-Chair and Lukas Mandl (EPP, AT) as 4th Vice-Chair. The Chair and the four Vice-Chairs form the Bureau of the SEDE Committee.

Parliament's committees deal with EU legislative proposals by adopting reports, which then are referred to plenary for voting by all Members, and appoint negotiation teams to conduct talks with Council. They adopt non-legislative reports, organise hearings with experts and scrutinise other EU bodies and institutions. Parliament can set up sub-committees and special committees to deal with specific issues. Each committee elects a chair and up to four vice-chairs for a two and a half year mandate.
