Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET) - Europäisches Parlament

On 26 September, the Committees on Foreign Affairs and on Development, together with the Subcommittee on Human Rights, presented the candidates for this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, one of the most important events of the European Parliament. On 13 October, AFET and DEVE committees will meet again to narrow down the list of nominees to a three-candidate shortlist, via a secret vote.
Each year the Sakharov Prize reaffirms the European Parliament's unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, a founding principle of the European Union. The winning 2022 laureate(s) will be announced on 20 October by the Conference of Presidents (EP's President and political group leaders) and an exchange of views with the laureate(s) will take place on 12 December. The Prize will be presented to the winner(s) at an award ceremony during the December plenary, on 14 December.

At the initiative of the FEMM Committee, the European Parliament will hold its third European Gender Equality Week during the last week of October 2022.

Following the success of the first two European Gender Equality Weeks organised in October 2020 and 2021, the European Parliament will continue this important initiative and hold the second European Gender Equality Week during the last week of October 2022. All parliamentary committees and delegations were invited to hold events addressing gender inequality issues in their areas of competence.

On 12 October, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi will present the 2022 enlargement package to the Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee. The debate will focus on Commission reports on the candidate and potential candidate countries for EU accession. Following the Commission's assessment of the EU-related reforms in the enlargement countries, AFET rapporteurs will draft resolutions, outlining Parliament's conclusions and recommendations for each country.

On 10 October, Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold a joint exchange of views with Toivo Klaar, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, on regional instability in view of new military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Later, MEPs will also vote on the Regulation laying down the rules for the exercise of the Union's rights under the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) and of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) with the United Kingdom. The aim of the regulation is to create a clear and transparent legislative framework that will allow the EU to take swift action vis-à-vis the UK in order to induce compliance or implement specific provisions under either agreement. The result of the vote, which is dealt jointly with the Committees on International Trade and Constitutional Affairs, will determine Parliament's position during the negotiations with the Council.
