In light of the deeply worrying developments in recent days on the Kosovo-Serbia border, leading MEPs issued this statement. “We are deeply concerned about the recent tensions at the Jarinje and Brnjak border crossings. Serbia and Kosovo must urgently find a peaceful and sustainable solution in order to ensure the security and safety of all citizens.

We wish to see the withdrawal of special police and any army units and the dismantling of roadblocks. Unilateral actions and provocations and inflammatory rhetoric, which increase tensions and affect the wellbeing of local communities, should stop. We call on the EU and its partners to continue to work on de-escalating the crisis and we urge the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to use the platform of the EU-facilitated Dialogue to resolve all open issues, including those related to freedom of movement.

We reiterate that the normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is a precondition for the EU accession of both countries, and is also essential for securing stability and prosperity in the wider region. We urge both sides to actively and constructively re-engage in the EU-facilitated dialogue led by the EU Special Representative, seeking a comprehensive, sustainable and legally binding agreement."

On 27 September AFET/DEVE/DROI will jointly present the candidates for this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, one of the most important events of the European Parliament. Each year it reaffirms the European Parliament’s unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, a founding principle of our Union.
The committees on foreign affairs and development will meet again on 14 October to narrow the list of nominees to a three-candidate shortlist. The winning 2021 laureate will be announced on 21 October by the Parliament's Conference of Presidents (President and political groups' leaders). The Prize will be presented to the winner at an awards ceremony during the December plenary meeting, on 15 December.

"In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Following these decisions, the next ordinary AFET Committee meeting will take place on 27 September (via videoconference).

MEPs from the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Committee on Development and the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan discussed the situation in the country with the EEAS and the European Commission on 1 September.
This followed the extraordinary meeting which took place on 19 August 2021 with Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission, where MEPs expressed their concern with developments in Afghanistan and called for urgent action to address the pressing needs on the ground as well as highlighting the implications for international migration.
The meeting on 1 September focused on the political and security situation in Afghanistan, including the humanitarian dimension and the regional stability.
