Véletlenül élő lépfene-baktériumot küldött szét egy amerikai katonai laboratórium

Egy amerikai katonai laboratórium a múlt héten véletlenül élő lépfene-baktériumot (antraxot) küldött szét kilenc magánlaboratóriumba az Egyesült Államokban, de a lakosságot nem fenyegeti veszély - jelentette be az amerikai védelmi minisztérium szerdán.

Négy embernél elővigyázatosságból antibakteriális kezelést kezdtek, illetve védőoltást kaptak.

Egy küldemény az amerikai hadsereg egyik dél-koreai támaszpontjára került. Az első közlések szerint ez sem jelentett kockázatot az alkalmazottakra, ám egy Szöulban később kiadott amerikai közlemény szerint 22 katonát ott is megelőző kezelésnek vetettek alá. Megbetegedésnek nincs jele, a veszélyes anyagot megsemmisítették - tette hozzá a közlemény.

A Pentagon illetékese kifejtette, hogy az anyagot a biológiai fegyveres fenyegetések elleni kutatások céljára küldték szét a múlt héten, és a szállítmányban inaktív baktériumnak kellett volna lennie. Utólag derült ki, hogy az anyag előzetes kezelése ellenére a baktérium egy része aktív maradt.

A minisztérium vizsgálja, hogy pontosan milyen hiba történt - jelezte a szóvivő.
A küldő laboratórium Utah államban, Dugwayben van. A tévedést a marylandi fogadó laboratóriumban fedezték fel, és azonnal értesítették a többi érintettet.

Amerikai kormányzati illetékesek szerint nem zárható ki, hogy a dugwayi intézetből már korábban is került ki hasonló módon élő baktérium.

A lépfene (antrax) egyes formáiban magas halálozási aránnyal járó fertőző betegség, amelyet a Bacillus Anthracis nevű baktérium okoz. A hidegháború idején több országban is előállítottak antraxot biológiai fegyverként.
