A delegation of the European Parliament, headed by Elmar Brok, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, met today, 2 November 2016, in New York with António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General-designate.
The delegation congratulated warmly Mr Guterres for his new appointment and conveyed as well a congratulation letter from President Schulz.
Chairman BROK stated: "As a European with a world view, holding both longstanding UN and strong political experience as Prime Minister and as President of the European Council, Antonio Guterres is best fit for the job!"
The MEPs held an exchange of views on the main challenges the UNSG-designate will face on peace and security in particular in Ukraine and the Middle East, migration and refugees, radicalisation and terrorism, human rights and gender issues. Especially, they discussed the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as an important instrument for a policy of prevention and development.
