During a visit to Rome Manfred Weber, President of the conservative European People's Party (EPP), has endorsed Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party in its campaign for the Italian parliamentary elections to be held on 25 September. Forza Italia has joined forces with far-right politicians Giorgia Meloni (Fratelli d'Italia) and Matteo Salvini (Lega) to form an alliance that looks set to win. Europe's press is alarmed.

In view of the soaring energy prices, the German government has announced a third relief package to support citizens and the economy in the crisis. The new package which includes electricity price caps, one-off payments, heating cost subsidies and a new citizen's allowance amounts to over 65 billion euros.

The conservative Polish PiS government is asking Germany for 1.3 trillion euros in reparations for the damages it suffered during World War II. The sum is based on a report commissioned in 2017 which was published on Thursday. Berlin has so far rejected all demands for reparations from Warsaw. In Poland too, there is also opposition to the PiS's move.
