The crisis in Spain's judiciary has come to a head: numerous key judicial posts have long been vacant because the country's main political parties have blocked the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary. Now Carlos Lesmes has resigned as president of the Council and president of Spain's Supreme Court and Spain's socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is negotiating with centre-right opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijoo.

Following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, Switzerland must reform its legislation on widow's pensions. Widows currently receive a lifelong survivor's pension under Swiss law. Widowers, on the other hand, are no longer entitled to receive the pension once their youngest child reaches adulthood. The ruling came after a Swiss widower filed a complaint against the legislation. Should men now get more money? Or women less?

Russia fired more than 80 missiles at civilian targets in Ukrainian cities including the centre of Kyiv on Monday. Moscow justified the attacks saying they were retaliation for "terrorist attacks" against Russian territory and blamed Ukraine for Saturday's explosion on the Crimea Bridge. Europe's press sees a new escalation but predicts that Russia won't gain anything from it in the long run.

The regime has responded with a brutal crackdown against demonstrators in which according to human rights organisations at least 150 people have died so far.
