Debate: Fear of more violence after Jenin attack

Israel has announced the completion of a two-day large-scale military offensive in the West Bank. Prime Minister Netanyahu explained, however, that this was "not a one-off operation". After several air strikes, ground troops were sent in to carry out raids in the city of Jenin, which is considered a militant Islamist stronghold. According to the Palestinians at least 13 people were killed. Commentators voice concern.

Debate: Chechnya: journalist and lawyer attacked

Russian journalist Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov have been attacked and beaten by unknown assailants in Chechnya. They were on their way to the sentencing of Zarema Musayeva, the mother of two Chechen human rights activists, who was abducted from Nizhny Novgorod and taken to Grozny in early 2022. Musayeva was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. Commentators see the events as significant from several perspectives.

Although the violent protests have largely subsided, the shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M. by a police officer during a traffic check and the ensuing riots are still a big topic in France and Europe. At a meeting attended by 220 mayors, President Emmanuel Macron pledged to pass legislation aimed at reconstructing damaged infrastructure as quickly as possible and providing long-term solutions to the problem. Commentators are worried about the far right capitalising on the crisis.

Debate: Hungary at odds over new law on teacher status

The Hungarian parliament has passed a controversial law on the legal status of teachers. Critics are calling it a "vengeance law" against teachers who have long been demonstrating for higher salaries and education reform.
