B-52 Stratofortress bomber doing what it does best.

The photographs in this post were taken during a combined live fire demonstration in Wadi Shadiya, Jordan, May 18.

They show a B-52H from 2nd Bomb Wing, from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, drop some 500-lb GBU-38 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) bombs during the “monumental military demonstration” that was the final event of Exercise “Eager Lion” a recurring multinational exercise designed to strengthen military-to-military relationships, increase interoperability between partner nations, and enhance regional security and stability.

Noteworthy, the two B-52 Stratofortress bombers that marked the first participation of strategic bombers to Eager Lion, performed a 30-plus hour, 14,000 mile nonstop mission to the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

They coordinated the attack with Jordanian JTACs (Joint Terminal Attack Controllers) and, after the attack run, overflew the range escorted by two Royal Jordanian Air Force F-16s.

In addition to 5,000 U.S. servicemen, the two-week yearly exercise saw the participation of Jordanian forces as well as contingents from 16 other countries for a total force of about 10,000 troops.

The exercise was held among five sites across Jordan and based on the scenario of a friendly contingent committed to the aid of an allied nation under threat by an aggressive neighbor. Along with the U.S. Air Force strategic bombers, Jordanian tactical planes and U.S. Army helicopters of the 185th Theater Aviation Brigade’s aviation task force, EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) teams, Seabees and patrol craft were used to perform port security in Aqaba, Jordan’s only coastal city, while a Marine crisis-response force out of Kuwait took part in the drills, practicing non-combatant evacuation operation (NCO) by means of MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft in the north.

(BRUXELLES2) Depuis que Matteo Renzi a dit vouloir détruire les navires encore à quai en Libye, c’est un grand phantasme, avec les « boots on the ground » : la destruction des navires de migrants. Or, la destruction des navires utilisés par les migrants a déjà lieu en mer, de façon habituelle et pour des raisons très concrètes.

6 navires coulés par la marine allemande

La chancelière allemande Angela Merkel l’a confirmé officiellement mardi (19 mai), lors d’une conférence de presse commune avec François Hollande. Depuis le début des opérations de sauvetage en mer, où la marine allemande est impliquée, « cinq bateaux gonflables et un bateau en bois ont été coulés ». NB : on peut, sans trop de difficulté, indiquer que cette pratique n’est pas particulière à Berlin. Les marines italiennes, françaises ou britanniques ont adopté les mêmes pratiques.

Eviter des accidents

La raison est simple et, avant tout, c’est une raison de sécurité maritime. « Les bateaux abandonnés poserait un danger pour la navigation. En raison de leur taille et leur manque d’éclairage, ils ne peuvent pas être vus la nuit, même par beau temps. Heurter un bateau abandonné pourrait entraîner des dommages au système de gouvernail ou de propulsion. »

Eviter des fausses alertes aux secours

Cela répond aussi à une motivation de préserver la bonne qualité des secours en mer. Un navire perdu en mer « vu d’un avion, ou à grande distance, ce n’est pas toujours clair s’il y a des gens à bord d’un bateau ». Pour en être sûr, il faudra envoyer des moyens sur place. « Jusqu’à ce que cela soit clair, que le bateau est abandonné, s’écoule de précieuses heures qui peuvent être mieux utilisées pour sauver d’autres personnes qui en auraient besoin ».

NB : Cela évite, enfin, que ces navires puissent être réutilisés le cas échéant par les passeurs qui viendraient les récupérer. Ces bateaux, faut-il le préciser n’ont généralement pas de pavillon, ni de capitaine en soi. Ce qui ne pose donc pas trop de problème juridique. Bien entendu, la destruction de ces navires se fait une fois toutes les personnes évacuées. Une vérification visuelle se fait au dernier moment afin de vérifier qu’il n’y a plus personne, réalisée par les militaires de l’équipe de visite ou d’abordage.

A round-table discussion on empowering women in Afghanistan to enable their participation in decision-making and reconciliation with the aim of building sustainable peace, took place on 20 May 2015 in Vienna. It was hosted by the Gender Section in the Office of the Secre­tary General and the Embassy and the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan in Vienna.

 The debate focused on how women’s participation in governance institutions is both a means to achieve, and an indicator of improved stability and security. It also highlighted the importance of including empowerment of women and respect for their rights as a fundamental principle in all post-2014 negotiations between relevant stakeholders.

The event was attended by a delegation from Afghanistan, led by Minister of Women’s Affairs Dilbar Nazari and included government officials, members of parliament and representatives of civil society and media.

Special Representative of the Chairmanship-in-Office on Gender Issues, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, said in her opening speech, “Any prospect for peace in Afghanistan will not be achieved without the full participation of women and the protection of their rights.”

“Experiences show that putting an end to conflict and achieving sustainable peace requires negotiations among all stakeholders in a transparent and inclusive process, where both men and women can have their voices and play a role in the relevant decision making and policy making processes,” said Minister of Women’s Affairs, Nazari.

She also noted that she is glad to see that women’s empowerment remains high on the agenda of the OSCE and that in this context support to Afghan women is becoming an important element of its increasing engagement with Afghanistan.
