[Ticker] US soybeans imports to EU jump nearly 300%

Imports of US soybeans to Europe increased by 283 percent in July, compared to July last year, according to figures released by the EU Wednesday. Soybeans from the US now represent 37 percent of imports, compared to 9 percent last year. The increase, mainly due to a fall in prices after Chinese tariffs on US products, predates European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker's promise last week to buy more US soybeans.

Belgian authorities, under a law adopted earlier this year, plan to charge €100 per year for journalists who ask for an accreditation for EU summits. The charge - €50 every six months - is to cover security screenings. API, the organisation that represents foreign correspondents in Brussels, called it discriminatory and an "unnecessary obstacle" to the work of journalists and will "restrict media access to events of great public interest."

European commissioner Vera Jourova, responsible for data protection, has told US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross America needs to finally appoint a permanent ombudsman, to deal with complaints from Europeans whose data is processed by American firms. The ombudsman is a requirement of the EU-US Privacy Shield agreement. Jourova said in a letter, seen by the FT, that there is "little reason for the delay" and set an October deadline.

"This government will not pursue it," deputy prime minister Luigi Di Maio told Corriere della Sera. Last week, Five Star Movement founder Beppe Grillo said Italians should have a referendum on the euro and a debate about a "plan B".
