In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

On 2 July 2020, the Conference of Presidents adopted the revised EP Calendar 2020.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the EP to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next SEDE Subcommittee meeting is scheduled to take place on 16 July 2020 (online).

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will discuss major European defence issues with French Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, on 2 July. The recent initiatives launched by the European Union and the French President's proposals will also be discussed.

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on security and defence with French Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, on 2 July. The debate will also go over the measures taken by the EU since the outbreak to tackle the pandemic by mobilising military assets. The short- and medium-term prospects for strengthening Europe's strategic independence, which has become particularly relevant in the light of this crisis, will also be looked into.

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the European defence industry on 25 June, with Internal Market Commissioner Breton. The debate will focus on ways of improving Europe's resilience and develop credible defence capabilities that would allow Europe to tackle similar situations in the future. The question of adequate financial support needed to achieve a genuine Defence Union, and improve the EU's strategic autonomy, will also be addressed.
