Bulgaria is the first country to be visited by Laura Kövesi in her capacity as the European Union's Chief Prosecutor. Shortly before, she had rejected six of the ten candidates put forward by Bulgaria to join the new European Public Prosecutor's Office. The visit coincided with protests against Bulgaria's chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev and the launch of the campaign for the parliamentary elections on July 11, in which corruption is one of the main topics.

The G7 summit which took place in Cornwall, England, after having been cancelled in 2020 came to an end on Sunday. Hopes were high that far-reaching resolutions on climate protection and pandemic control would be reached, especially since participants had already agreed on a global minimum corporate tax before the summit. But according to most commentators the high expectations were not fulfilled.

Denmark's midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed in the 43rd minute of the European Championship match against Finland and had to be resuscitated. Faced with the choice of continuing the game or postponing it to the next day, the teams decided to restart the match once Eriksen's condition had stabilised in hospital. For Europe's press, the incident raises several questions.

The Swiss rejected three draft laws for environmental protection on Sunday. They voted narrowly (51.6 per cent) against the CO2 law and by just over 60 percent against an initiative for improving the quality of drinking water and a law banning synthetic pesticides. After twelve years in office Benjamin Netanyahu is no longer Israeli prime minister. The Knesset voted on Sunday by a razor-thin majority of 60 to 59 votes for an eight-party government coalition led by the ultra-nationalist Naftali Bennett which includes Jair Lapid's liberal Future Party and - for the first time in the country's history - an Arab party, Ra'am.
