The UN's war crimes tribunal in The Hague has sentenced the former leader of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadžić to life imprisonment, increasing the sentence of 40 years handed down by the previous court. Angered by the lack of proper motorways in his country, a Romanian entrepreneur has built a one-metre-long stretch of highway as a symbolic gesture of protest. Many Romanians have rallied around him and staged a 15-minute strike in support of his protest last week. The entire country has only around 800 kilometres of motorway. Romania's press is impressed by the action.

Theresa May wanted to present her Brexit deal to the House of Commons again today, but parliamentary speaker John Bercow has prevented another vote on the agreement. Now the prime minister must either make changes to it, dissolve parliament or secure the support of a majority of MPs to push through a third vote. Was this a good move by Bercow?

The EPP group in the European Parliament will decide today on whether to exclude Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party. Thirteen of the 48 member parties had called for the move. The Hungarian PM then called critics within the group "useful idiots" of the left, but apologised for the statement in a letter last week. Whether the group will go ahead and expel Fidesz remains unclear.

Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev has resigned after almost 30 years as leader of the former Soviet republic. Parliamentary Speaker Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will take over as president until elections in 2020. Will this bring change to the country?
