Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the French party The Republicans, has resigned in the wake of its poor showing in the EU elections. The successor party to former president Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP and France's biggest conservative party received just 8.48 percent of the vote. Commentators disagree as to what the resignation means for President Macron.

Debate: Beijing remains silent on Tiananmen massacre

After the death of the comparatively liberal Communist Party leader Hu Yaobang in mid-April 1989 hundreds of thousands demonstrated on Tiananmen Square for political reforms. The peaceful protest ended at the start of June in a massacre carried out by the army that left hundreds dead. In China all discussion of the events is still taboo.

Debate: Hungarians march for free scientific research

Around 5,000 people demonstrated on Saturday in Budapest against the government's plans to nationalise the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). They held signs that read: "Nationalisation is not innovation" and "Thou shalt not steal". Now is the time for protests, opposition media urge.

The European Union has invested more €450m in research projects related to genome-editing, which "can cure or treat patients affected by life-threatening diseases" EU science commissioner Carloes Moedas told MEPs. He said the European Commission was "exploring different activities to stimulate and inform the scientific and social debate on the applications of genome editing technologies for healthcare", including an EU-wide survey of citizens' opinions on such technologies.

[Ticker] Five-party centre-left coalition ready to rule Finland

Finland's social democrat prime minister-designate, Antti Rinne, announced on Monday that his new government will include 19 ministers from five parties. The coalition will have a solid majority, with 116 seats, and make Rinne the country's first leftwing prime minister in 16 years. The Greens, one of the biggest winners in April's elections, will get the foreign and environment minister posts. Finland takes over the EU presidency from 1 July.
