As co-founder and head of the Human Rights Centre "Viasna", Ales Bialiatski has worked tirelessly and at risk of his life to advance the rights of Belarusians since Soviet times. He was awarded the Sakharov Prize in 2020 as part of the Belarussian democratic opposition and the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2022, together with the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian Center of Civil Liberties. In March 2023, he was sentenced to ten years in prison in a politically motivated trial.
