A US jury has sentenced Bayer subsidiary Monsanto to pay 289 million dollars - or roughly 254 million euros - in damages to Dewayne Johnson, a gardener suffering from cancer. The company had failed to sufficiently inform Johnson of the hazards of using the weedkiller Roundup, which contains glyphosate, the jury found. What consequences will the case have for European agriculture?

In Germany the number of foreigners receiving child benefit has reached record levels, triggering political protest against "social migration" from Eastern Europe. Are payments for children outside the country unjust?

Debate: Should all Danes automatically be donors?

After a successful citizens' initiative the Danish parliament must now examine a reform of the legislation governing organ donation. Under the new rules all adult citizens would automatically be potential donors - unless they actively reject it. Danish media are critical of the reform.

[Ticker] Man held after car crashes into UK parliament security barrier

Armed police in London have arrested a man after a car crashed into security barriers outside the UK parliament early on Tuesday. Several pedestrians were reported to be injured, although none seriously. Parliament is currently in the summer recess. Police said it was too early to determine if the incident was terrorism-related, although one witness told The Guardian the vehicle had no front numberplate.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had planned to update its guidelines on the readability of leaflets accompanying medicines. "However, the completion of the work is currently impacted by the forthcoming move of the EMA from London to Amsterdam and the need for EMA to focus on core business priorities for the time being," EU health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said in a written statement to the European Parliament on Monday.

French rescue vessel Aquarius stranded again, seeks port

Less than a month before the Swedish general election, a wave of possibly co-ordinated attacks on Monday evening saw dozens of cars set alight and stones thrown at police by gangs of masked youths. In Gothenburg alone over 80 vehicles were destroyed or badly damaged, police said. Similar incidents were reported in Malmo, Helsingborg and Trollhattan. A election stall in Linkoping of the far-right Sweden Democrats was also set alight.

Both Spain and Italy appear unwilling to accept a new group of 141 migrants rescued by the Aquarius boat on Friday. "Spain is not the safest port", sources close to Spain's prime minster were reported saying by El Pais. "It can go where it wants, (but) not to Italy!", Italy's deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, tweeted. Spain offered the ship safe port in June, when Italy and Malta denied entry.

The world's largest seed and agrochemical company, German multinational Bayer's stock slumped more than 10 percent in trading on Monday, three days after a San Francisco jury ruled the company's subsidiary Monsanto liable for a terminally-ill man's cancer and awarded him €254m in damages. Monsanto, the maker of the glyphosate weedkiller Roundup, was acquired by Bayer in June for €55bn.
