The EU Parliament has recognised by a large majority the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country's interim president. At the same time the MEPs called on EU member states to follow suit. Several EU countries had already given Maduro an ultimatum to convoke new elections by this Sunday. A no deal departure from the EU in March would leave Britain without oversight of key energy and environment problems until at least 2021, a think-tank warned on Thursday (31 January). EURACTIV's media partner, Climate Home News, reports.

Bulgaria has pledged to build a new pipeline to pump Russian gas from Turkey to Serbia after three firms, including Russia's Gazprom, Bulgaria's Bulgargaz, and Swiss firm MET signed contracts to use it. The €1.4bn project could strengthen EU dependence on gas and undermine Ukrainian security, EU and US diplomats fear. Russia is also building a second pipe, Nord Stream 2, to bypass Ukraine, which it invaded in 2014.
