Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) - European Parliament

The Commission Executive Vice-President/Commissioner-designate, Valdis Dombrovskis, appeared before the European Parliament on 02 October 2020 to answer questions put by MEPs from the Committee on International Trade, in association with the Committees on Foreign Affairs, on Economic and Monetary Affairs, on Development and on Budgets. During the hearing, he made a number of commitments which are highlighted in this document. These commitments refer to his portfolio as Trade Commissioner, as described in the mission letter sent to him by Ursula von der Leyen, President-elect of the European Commission, including: - A level playing field for all; - Strengthening Europe’s global leadership; - Trade for sustainable development and climate action

On 6 October, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi will present to the AFET members the 2020 Enlargement Package and the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans.
Following the Commission assessment of the EU-related reforms in each enlargement country, AFET rapporteurs will draft country reports, outlining Parliament's conclusions and recommendations. The funding of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans will be shaped by the yet-to-be-agreed Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA III).

"In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

On 2 April, the Conference of Presidents updated the EP's calendar of activities to introduce an extraordinary plenary session on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April in Brussels, and additional dates for remote meetings for EP governing bodies, committees and political groups.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The next ordinary AFET Committee meetings will take place on 1, 12, 26 October (via videoconference).
