Plenary sessions : MEPs advocate a full and immediate EU-wide ban on ivory and rhinoceros horn trade, and call for common sanctions at EU level against wildlife trafficking, in a resolution voted on Thursday. Wildlife trafficking is worth an estimated €20 billion annually. It has grown in recent years, becoming one of the biggest and most profitable forms of organised cross-border crime.

Press release - EU-US deal on law enforcement data transfers backed by Civil Liberties Committee - Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs

The EU-US data protection framework, known as the “Umbrella Agreement” was backed by a large majority in the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday morning. The deal will ensure high, binding data protection standards for data exchanged by police and law enforcement authorities across the Atlantic.

Diplomacy, development and defence should be the pillars of EU foreign policy, say Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. They call on member states to show more unity and trust, and to speak with one voice, so as to make the EU a global player. MEPs also advocate a more realistic strategy on Russia and a “less for less” policy towards countries that try to throw democracy into reverse.

Wir haben die Regisseurin Maren Ade aus Deutschland zu ihrem Film über eine Vater-Tochter-Beziehung interviewt und sie gefragt, was es bedeutet, den vom EU-Parlament vergebenen LUX-Filmpreis zu erhalten.

Artikel - Reform des EU-Mehrwertsteuersystems

Plenartagung : Die derzeitigen EU-Mehrwertsteuerregeln für den grenzüberschreitenden Handel stammen aus dem Jahr 1993. Eine Reform ist nötig, um einerseits den Anforderungen expandierender Unternehmen und des wachsenden E-Commerce-Sektors nachzukommen und andererseits Mehrwertsteuerbetrug zu bekämpfen. Am Donnerstag (24.11.) hat das Plenum einen Bericht des EU-Abgeordneten Werner Langen (EVP, DE), der auf den Aktionsplan der Kommission im Bereich der Mehrwertsteuer Bezug nimmt, angenommen.

Press release - Bentazone herbicide: MEPs object to Commission plans to renew EU authorisation

Plenary sessions : The EU authorisation for Bentazone herbicide, which expires on 30 June 2017, should not be renewed as its safety has yet to be confirmed, says a non-binding resolution voted on Wednesday. MEPs point out that Bentazone can easily leak directly into groundwater and is suspected of interfering with human reproduction.

Plenartagung : Der Druck auf die EU durch Propaganda aus Russland und von islamistischen Terroristen wächst stetig, sagen die Abgeordneten in einer am Mittwoch angenommenen Entschließung. Diese Propaganda verzerre Wahrheiten, schüre Angst und Zweifel und wolle Europa spalten. Um solche Anti-EU-Kampagnen zu bekämpfen, schlägt das Parlament vor, die kleine „Task Force für strategische Kommunikation“ der EU zu verstärken.

Pressemitteilung - Umwelt: Parlament unterstützt strengere Grenzwerte für Luftschadstoffe

Plenartagung : Am Mittwoch hat sich das Parlament für strengere nationale Grenzwerte für Emissionen von bestimmten Schadstoffen ausgesprochen. Darunter fallen Stickstoffoxide (NOx), luftverunreinigende Partikel und Schwefeldioxid (SO2). Die Grenzwerte waren bereits informell mit der niederländischen Ratspräsidentschaft vereinbart worden. Schlechte Luftqualität verursacht jedes Jahr ungefähr 400.000 vorzeitige Todesfälle in der EU.

Press release - Tax evasion: MEPs back automatic exchange of bank data to track account owners

Press release - North Sea cod fisheries: MEPs end time-at-sea limits

Plenary sessions : North Sea cod fishermen will be able to land every catch – not just cod – more easily following Parliament’s green light on Tuesday. The updated regulation will remove limits on the number of days a vessel can spend in a fishing area and thus remove all obstacles to complying with the landing obligation in full.

Plenary sessions : Various ways to avoid or cushion the negative impact of austerity were debated in Monday evening’s debate with Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis on EU economic priorities in 2017 and yearly “European Semester” economic policy coordination work. While some MEPs argued that austerity could not be avoided by overspending and incurring debt, others called for expansionist investments and a more social Europe.

Press release - Syria, EU-Turkey relations and West Bank up for debate on Tuesday afternoon

Plenary sessions : Latest developments in Syria, including last week’s attacks on rebel-held areas of eastern Aleppo, will be debated with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday at 15.00. In a second debate, MEPs will discuss whether EU accession talks with Turkey could be frozen or made subject to further conditions. The situation in the West Bank, including settlements, will also be debated with the High Representative later in the afternoon.

Das Plenum debattiert heute Nachmittag (22.11.) über einen Bericht, der stärkere Gegenmaßnahmen und eine intensivere Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten fordert. Wir haben mit der Berichterstatterin Anna Fotyga (EKR) aus Polen über die Folgen der Desinformationskampagnen gesprochen und darüber, wie man diesen begegnen sollte.
