Plenartagung : Die Vorschriften, die die EU-Mitgliedstaaten verpflichten, die EU-Kommission über ihre Pläne zur Verhandlung von Energieversorgungsangeboten mit Drittländern zu informieren, bevor sie die Verhandlungen aufnehmen, wurden am Donnerstag von den Abgeordneten gebilligt. Dies ist der erste Teil des Gesetzespakets zur Energieunion, der zum Abschluss kommt.

Plenary sessions : The EU Commission is legally obliged to take measures temporarily reintroducing visa requirements for US citizens, given that Washington still does not grant visa-free access to nationals of five EU countries. In a resolution approved on Thursday, MEPs urge the Commission to adopt the necessary legal measures “within two months”.

Plenary sessions : Until the UK leaves the EU, it must obey EU laws on free movement, said a majority of MEPs in a plenary debate with the EU Commission on Wednesday. The EU Commission must ensure that the free movement rights of EU citizens living in the UK are respected, they added. Many speakers also underlined that EU citizens should not be used as ”bargaining chips” in the Brexit negotiations.

Plenartagung : Führende Abgeordnete der verschiedenen Fraktionen haben am Mittwoch auf das Weißbuch der EU-Kommission zur Zukunft Europas reagiert, das Kommissionspräsident Jean-Claude Juncker dem Plenum vorgestellt hat. Einige begrüßten die Entscheidung der Kommission, fünf mögliche Szenarien zu skizzieren, wo die Union in Zukunft stehen könnte. Andere wiederum bedauerten den Mangel an konkreten Beispielen, oder dass kein klarer Weg vorgezeichnet wurde.

Plenary sessions : MEPs called for safe environments for unaccompanied refugee children, including immediate appointment of guardians, hotlines and increased cross-border cooperation, in Wednesday’s debate with Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on the disappearance of migrant children in Europe.

Plenary sessions : MEPs led a debate with Commission representatives and the Maltese presidency of the Council on Wednesday afternoon regarding the upcoming European Council of 9-10 March. Many stressed the need to continue focussing on an ambitious EU, whereas some decried the EU’s current direction and track record.

Ukrainian citizens will be able to travel to the EU visa free under an informal deal struck by Parliament and Council negotiators on Tuesday. Once the change enters into force, and provided they have biometric passports, they will be able to enter the EU for up to 90 days in any 180-day-period for business, tourist or family purposes.

Montenegro is the most advanced EU accession candidate country, which in 2016 had to face Russian attempts to discredit its achievements, noted Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs on Tuesday. They also reviewed last year’s reform efforts in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, urging the future government to step up the pace of reform and stay on the EU track.

The recent progress in normalising relations between Belgrade and Pristina, after months of little or none, was welcomed by MEPs on Tuesday. However, in two resolutions they call on both countries to show more commitment and sustained political will to achieve this goal, which is a condition for their accession to the EU.

EU citizens could access registers of beneficial owners of companies without having to demonstrate a “legitimate interest,” and trusts would have to meet the same transparency requirements as firms, under amendments, agreed by MEPs on Tuesday, to the EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive.

Plenartagung : Chemische Pestizide sind zwar effektiv, stehen jedoch unter Verdacht, der Umwelt oder der Gesundheit des Menschen zu schaden. Nach Angaben der Europäischen Behörde für Lebensmittelsicherheit (EFSA) enthalten rund 45% der in EU/EWR-Ländern genommenen Lebensmittelproben Pestizidrückstände (bei 1,6% der Proben überschreiten die Pestizide die gesetzlichen Grenzwerte). Das Parlament möchte die Verwendung von Pestiziden mit geringem Risiko fördern und deren Genehmigungsverfahren beschleunigen.

Allgemeines : Das EU-Parlament hat am vergangenen Mittwoch (15.2.) dem Freihandelsabkommen CETA mit Kanada zugestimmt. Damit kann das "umfassende Wirtschafts- und Handelsabkommen zwischen der EU und Kanada" bereits ab April 2017 teilweise "vorläufig angewandt" werden. Nach der Abstimmung im Plenum haben wir mit dem Berichterstatter des Parlaments, dem lettischen EU-Abgeordneten Artis Pabriks (EVP), gesprochen. Er bezeichnet CETA als "Goldstandard" für künftige moderne Freihandelsabkommen.

Plenartagung : Das EU-Parlament hat dem Freihandelsabkommen zwischen der EU und Kanada (CETA) zugestimmt. Der kanadische Premierminister Justin Trudeau sprach am Tag nach der Abstimmung vor den EU-Abgeordneten in Straßburg. Im Rahmen dieser Plenartagung hielt auch der österreichische Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen eine Rede im Parlament. Die EU-Abgeordneten haben außerdem neue Maßnahmen zur Terrorismusbekämpfung verabschiedet und ihre Visionen zur Zukunft der EU dargelegt.

Allgemeines : Radikalisierte EU-Bürger, die als Kämpfer nach Syrien oder in den Irak reisen, stellen eine wachsende Bedrohung dar. Bei der Mehrzahl der jüngsten Terroranschläge in Europa handelte es sich um "hausgemachten" Terrorismus und an einigen Anschlägen waren zurückgekehrte ausländische Kämpfer beteiligt. Das EU-Parlament hat am 16.2. neue Maßnahmen zur Terrorbekämpfung gebilligt. Vorbereitende Handlungen für Terrorakte werden unter Strafe gestellt und die Kontrollen an den EU-Außengrenzen verschärft.

Plenartagung : Der kanadische Premierminister Justin Trudeau hielt am Donnerstag (16.2.) eine Rede vor den EU-Abgeordneten in Straßburg. Am Vortag hatte das Parlament das "umfassende Wirtschafts- und Handelsabkommen zwischen der EU und Kanada" (CETA) gebilligt. "Bei CETA geht es nicht nur um Handel, Importe, Exporte und Gewinne, sondern darum, das Leben der Menschen zu verbessern", sagte Kanadas Premier. Justin Trudeau ist der erste kanadische Premierminister, der vor dem Plenum gesprochen hat.
