The Lisbon Treaty increased the European Parliament’s powers over EU trade policy. Ten years after its entry into force it is timely to take stock of how the EP has made use of this leverage in shaping the EU’s trade negotiations. Such an exercise benefits from a comparison with other well-established parliamentary democracies, particularly the key partners with whom the EU has recently negotiated or has started to negotiate a comprehensive trade agreement. This study compares parliamentary scrutiny of trade policy in the EU with the United States, Canada and Australia. It concludes that the European Parliament has become powerful and active in trade policy, on a comparable level to the US Congress. Its powers exceed those of other Western democracies, such as Australia and Canada. From the latter the European Parliament may conclude that it is important to codify some of its informal oversight practices, before they may get lost over time again. This may also help to encourage its trading partners to increase their parliamentary involvement during negotiations with the EU. As regards the implementation of trade agreements however, the EU has very few competences in comparison to all other three countries analysed.

Weekly schedule of President Donald Tusk 25-31 March 2019

The EU is ensuring continuity of train services between the EU (France and Ireland) and the UK in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

At the press conference held at the end of the March European Council meetings, President Tusk presented the results of the discussions on economy, climate change, disinformation, China and Brexit.

The European Council adopted conclusions on jobs, growth and competitiveness, climate change, external relations, as well as securing free and fair elections and fighting disinformation.

The European Council (Article 50) adopted a decision formalising the political agreement reached on 21 March 2019 on extending the period under Article 50.

The European Council appointed today Mr Philip R. Lane as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank for a non-renewable term of 8 years.

In his remarks President Donald Tusk underlined the mutual benefits and close partnership between the 31 countries the European Economic Area.

At the press conference following the meeting of the European Council in Article 50 format, President Tusk presented the decisions with regard to the the extension of the Article 50 period.

The European Council (Art. 50) on 21 March 2019 adopted conclusions on Brexit.

The Romanian Presidency and the Parliament reach a provisional agreement on the review of the European architecture for financial supervision.

The EU issued a declaration on World Water Day, remembering how much access to sufficient, safe, drinkable, physically accessible and affordable water is precondition for a decent life.
