An extraordinary joint meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, in association with the Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee, will take place on Tuesday, 31 January 2023 from 15.00 - 16.30hrs in Brussels (room SPAAK 1A002).

The next ordinary meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) is scheduled to take place on Monday, 6 February 2023 from 15.30 - 19.30hrs in Brussels (room SPINELLI 3G2).

Highlights - Exchange of views with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 24 January, AFET and SEDE will hold a joint exchange of views with Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the IAEA has been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
The debate will focus on negotiations launched by the IAEA with Ukraine and Russia with a view to establishing a safe zone around Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, as well as other measures taken by the IAEA to prevent nuclear accidents on all Ukrainian nuclear sites. Members will also discuss other issues of concern, in particular Iran's flagrant violations of its international nuclear non-proliferation obligations, as well as the nuclear programme of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Hearings - Hearing on foreign interference in the European Parliament - 26-01-2023 - Special Committee on foreign interference in all democratic processes in the European Union, including disinformation (INGE 2) - Committee on Foreign Affairs -...

On 26 January a joint hearing on "Recent Cases of Foreign Interference in the European Parliament - Allegations of Corruption" will take place from 14.00 to 17.00. It will be organised by the Special Committee on Foreign Interference (ING2), jointly with the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE).
The hearing will analyse the practices and strategies used by a number of third countries to interfere in the EU democratic functioning through illegal actions such as corruption. These actions represent a direct attack against the European Parliament and European democracy. They also show the need to reinforce transparency and accountability within the EU institutions. Three experts will present their findings and respond to questions from the Members.

This hearing will be held in association with the Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula (DARP) and the Delegation for relations with Maghreb countries (DMAG).

Highlights - Firearms trafficking and its major global concern in the world - 25 January 2023 - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 25 January, SEDE Members will exchange views with Simonetta GRASSI, Head of the UNOCD Firearms Trafficking Section. Firearms trafficking is one the major global concerns that affects all parts of the world. Illicit firearms, organised crime and armed conflict are often intertwined and can lead to escalating violence and hindering governance.
The debate will therefore focus on global trends in arms trafficking, and initiatives that can be taken to at European and international level to address this problem including the implementation of the UN Firearms Protocol. Main achievements and further mitigation measures to be implemented in the EU's neighbourhood, notably in Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova, including through strengthening cooperation between CSDP missions, Europol and Frontex, will also be discussed.

Highlights - Security and defence priorities of the Swedish Presidency - 25 January 2023 - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 25 January, Swedish Minister of Defence Pål JONSON, will present to SEDE Members priorities of the Swedish Presidency of the Council in the area of security and defence. In the context of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the debate will focus in particular on ways to address the most urgent needs by increasing supply of heavy combat equipment to Ukrainian armed forces.
This will require boosting the European Peace Facility and implementing the proposed instrument allowing for joint procurement of military equipment - the EDIRPA. In relation with the EU's support in providing lethal military equipment for Ukraine, a regular in camera exchange of views with the EEAS services on the European Peace Facility, including the Clearing House mechanism, will take place the same day.

This 'cost of non-Europe' report looks at the potential benefits of efficient, ambitious and united EU-level action in the space sector. The report finds that to enable the European space sector to benefit from open strategic autonomy, and to ensure EU access to and use of space, including for its security, the EU must act decisively. Moving away from fragmentation could bring large benefits, amounting to at least €140 billion per year by 2050.
