Press release - Turkey: need of urgent reforms in key areas, say MEPs

Plenary sessions : EU-Turkey cooperation on migration should be uncoupled from the EU accession negotiating process, say MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. MEP praise Turkey for hosting the largest refugee population in the world, and note that it remains a "key strategic partner for the EU" but nonetheless call for progress on rule of law and fundamental values and "a structured and more frequent political dialogue on key thematic issues".

Press release - Earth Hour: European Parliament to switch off its lights

General : The European Parliament will once again mark "Earth Hour" by switching off lights in all its buildings on Saturday 19 March from 20.30h to 21.30h. "Earth Hour" is a global environmental initiative, begun in Sydney in 2007, to raise awareness of the need to act to fight climate change.

Press release - EU-US “Privacy Shield”: MEPs to examine new deal on transatlantic data transfers - Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs

The new “Privacy Shield” framework on EU-US transfers of personal data by private firms, which is to replace the former "Safe Harbour" one, will be debated by Civil Liberties Committee MEPs in a hearing on Thursday afternoon. Austrian citizen Max Schrems, whose court case against facebook led to Safe Harbour's downfall, the US lead negotiator, the EU Data Protection Supervisor, representatives from the Article 29 Working Party, the European Commission and others will all be quizzed on the deal.

Press release - MEPs want EU embassies and consulates to grant asylum seekers humanitarian visas - Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs

To dissuade refugees from putting their lives at risk by entrusting them to people smugglers, EU consulates and embassies should be allowed to issue humanitarian visas to persons seeking international protection, said Civil Liberties Committee MEPs voting on an update of the EU Visa Code on Wednesday. These visas would enable holders to enter the country issuing the visa in order to apply for asylum.

Sajtóközlemény - Menedékkérelmek: központi, Uniós rendszerre és nemzeti kvótákra van szükség - Állampolgári Jogi, Bel- és Igazságügyi Bizottság

Az EU menekültügyi rendszere képtelen megbirkózni a migránsok egyre növekvő számával, ezért a dublini szabályok radikális átalakítására van szükség, mondták szerdán az EP állampolgári jogi és igazságügyi szakbizottságának (LIBE) képviselői. Javaslatuk szerint a menekültügyi kérelmeket egy központi rendszerben kellene begyűjteni és szétosztani. A tagállami kvótákat is magában foglaló rendszer az úgynevezett hotspot-okra épülne, az Európába érkező menekülteket ugyanis innen osztanák szét.

Press release - Google, Apple, IKEA and McDonalds probed by Tax Rulings II Committee - Special Committee on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect (TAXE 2)

Google, Apple, Inter-IKEA Group and McDonald's would welcome more clarity and certainty about their tax liabilities in the EU, but they are concerned about the administrative compliance costs and reluctant to see tax data being made public. So said their representatives at a public hearing, held by Parliament's Special Committee on Tax Rulings II on Tuesday, to elicit their views on recent and upcoming proposed legislation on corporate tax.

Plenáris ülés : Hogy le lehessen küzdeni a baktériumok növekvő antibiotikum-rezisztenciáját, vissza kell fogni az antimikrobiális gyógyszerek használatát és újakat kell kifejleszteni, jelentette ki az Európai Parlament csütörtökön. Az állatorvosi gyógyszerekről szóló jogszabály tervezett frissítéséről szóló csütörtöki szavazáson a képviselők támogatták az állatok kollektív és preventív antibiotikumos kezelésének betiltását és az új gyógyszerek kutatásának stimulálásra szolgáló intézkedéseket.

Press release - MEPs back duty-free imports of Tunisian olive oil with EU producer safeguards

Plenary sessions : MEPs voted emergency measures into law on Thursday to help Tunisia’s economy by importing 70,000 tonnes of its virgin olive oil duty free in 2016/17, after adding safeguards for EU olive oil producers. These include a mid-term assessment of the effects of the measures, updating them if they turn out to be harmful, and ensuring that the imports are tracked from start to finish.

Plenáris ülés : A képviselők többsége egy szerdán megszavazott állásfoglalásban arra kérte az Európai Bizottságot, hogy ne újítsa meg az EU csempészet- és hamisítás ellenes, 2016 júliusában lejáró megállapodását a Philip Morris Internationallel (PMI). Helyette arra kérik a Bizottságot, hogy uniós és nemzetközi jogi eszközökkel harcoljon a csempészet ellen.

Press release - MEPs strengthen rights of children in criminal proceedings

Plenary sessions : MEPs backed new rules on Wednesday to ensure that children who are suspected or accused of a crime get a fair trial. The directive, informally agreed with the Council last December, recognises the right of anyone under 18 to be assisted by a lawyer and to be accompanied by the holder of parental responsibility (or another appropriate adult) through most of the proceedings.

Press release - Ending EU citizens' bank secrecy in Andorra

Plenary sessions : An EU deal with Andorra, which will make it harder for EU citizens to hide cash from the tax man in bank accounts there, was endorsed by Parliament in a vote on Wednesday. Under the deal, the EU and Andorra will automatically exchange information on the bank accounts of each other's residents, starting in 2018 for information collected since 1 January 2017.

Plenáris ülés : A képviselők szerdán az EU vezetői és Törökország által a bevándorlási és menekülthullám kezelésére kötött megállapodás részleteit követelték, aláhúzva, a nemzetközi menekültjogi szabályok betartásának fontosságát. A Tanács és a Bizottság részvételével tartott plenáris vitán a legtöbb képviselőcsoport vezetője leszögezte, hogy nem szabad a menekültkérdést összekötni a török csatlakozási tárgyalások, és az EU-ba utazó török állampolgárok vízummentességének a kérdésével.

Press release - Same work, same pay – MEPS react to new proposal on posted workers

Plenary sessions : Parliament debated proposed revised rules for workers who are employed in one member state and temporarily sent to another by their employer, as presented by Employment Commissioner Marianne Thyssen, on Tuesday evening. Political groups' speakers were divided: for centre-left MEPs, it was not far-reaching enough to prevent exploitation of workers, while centre-right MEPs expressed concern about its impact on competitiveness and SMEs.
