Általános : Sok helyen áram, fűtés és víz nélkül maradtak az emberek Kelet-Ukrajnában a -20 fokos hidegben, miután az oroszbarát lázadók megszegték a tűzszünetet és bombázni kezdték a területet a múlt héten. A harcok kihatnak egész Európára és annak biztonságára is, ezért a Parlament is napirendre vette a helyzetről szóló vitát hétfőn a védelmi albizottság ülésén. A bizonytalan amerikai külpolitika és egy esetlegesen agresszívan fellépő Oroszország döntései nem várt fordulatokat hozhat Európa számára.

The worsening security situation in eastern Ukraine, where heavy fighting with pro-Russian rebels recently broke out in the government-controlled town of Avdiivka, were debated by Security and Defence Subcommittee MEPs on Monday with Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. MEPs urged Russia to stop testing the West’s reactions and to go on implementing the Minsk agreements.

General : European Parliament President Antonio Tajani visited Malta on the eve of the Informal European Council to be held in Valletta on 3 February. Albania needs to implement EU-related reforms credibly, and ensure that its June parliamentary elections are free and fair, if it is to start EU accession negotiations, said Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs on Tuesday. In a separate resolution, they also urged Bosnia and Herzegovina to overcome its ethnic and political divisions and remain united throughout the EU membership application evaluation process, to prove that it is a functioning state.
