At the initiative of the FEMM Committee, the European Parliament held its first ever European Gender Equality Week during the last week of October 2020.
2020 is a special year, marking the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This important milestone provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the achievements and future challenges for the advancement of girls' and women's rights and gender equality. Therefore, the European Parliament held for the first time its European Gender Equality Week, which gave much-needed input to the long lasting battle for women's empowerment and gender equality as well as more visibility and recognition to gender mainstreaming in all policy areas.

Many committees took part in the Gender Equality Week and organized events during the last days of October, while some others will look into gender mainstreaming aspects in their fields of competences later this year.

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Following these decisions, the next meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) will take place on 16 November 2020 (online).

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will discuss the continuing global threat from Daesh and its affiliates, on 28 October. In spite of its drastic loss of territory in Syria and Iraq, the group remains undoubtedly dangerous, as shown by the recent tragedy in France. The debate is expected to focus in particular on the danger of Daesh propaganda and the problems of infiltration and disinformation within the European Union.

In the framework of the Gender Equality Week, the SEDE Subcommittee will hold on 29 October 2020 an exchange of views on the 20th Anniversary of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) including a focus on women in CSDP. The emphasis will be on progress achieved in ensuring full participation of women in peace processes around the world. Members will also assess additional steps that need to be taken to further enhance the role of women in all phases of peacebuilding, while increasing in particular the number of women taking part in the decision-making process. The debate will also include a focus on women in CSDP missions/operations and actions taken by the EU and its Member States to fully implement UNSCR 1325 on WPS.

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold a debate with Admiral Matteo Bisceglia, Director of the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR), on 15 October. The debate will focus on how OCCAR fits into recently launched defence initiatives, which aim to strengthen the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the European defence industry. The consequences of Brexit for the Organisation and for the European capacity building, will also be discussed.

On 2 July 2020, the Conference of Presidents adopted the revised EP Calendar 2020.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the EP to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next SEDE meeting is scheduled to take place on 15 October 2020 (online).
