10th anniversary of United Nations Human RightsCouncil, time to reflect

During a two-day visit, on 14-15 March 2016, a delegation of the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) led by its Chair Elena Valenciano (S&D, ES) met with, amongst others, the President of the Human Rights Council (HRC), the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, the Director General of the International Organisation for Migration and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders at the31st Human Rights Council Plenary.

Concerned by the largest migration crisis since World War II, the Subcommittee on Human Rights' hearing will address three core topics : the main causes of migration, the problem of human rights violations that occur along migration routes and the importance of a human rights-based approach to migration-related policies. Red Crescent from Tunisia, the International Organisation of Migration of Turkey and a representative from the Jordan government will present their regional perspectives.

Human Rights: freedom of speech in Kazakhstan, Giulio Regeni, DRC
Parliament condemns the deteriorating climate for the media and free speech in Kazakhstan, the torture and assassination under suspicious circumstances of EU citizen Giulio Regeni in Egypt, and the worsening security and human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in three resolutions voted on Thursday, 10 March.

EU should use trade agreement negotiations to make an impact on the human rights situation in countries with which it foresees economic bounds, called MEPs from the Subcommittee on Human Rights during a debate on Thursday morning 3 March. Ms Elena Valenciano, Chair of the of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, expressed her grave concerns at the arrest of several activists from the youth movement, Lutte pour le Changement (LUCHA), on 16 February 2016, just before the general strike took place. The strike was called by opposition political parties and civil society organisations, to protest against delays in the preparation for the 2016 presidential elections in the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC).

Upon request by the FEMM Committee, the study presents an overview of the most important issues faced by refugees and asylum seeking women in their host country regarding access to appropriate housing, including privacy and shelter in case of domestic violence, training and language courses, the labour market, and the health systems, including psychological support and trauma healing. A summary of international standards and of applicable European laws, as well as details on available funding from the European level are provided. International promising projects illustrate the way forward.

The Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will hold an inter-parliamentary committee meeting dealing with the issue of women refugees and asylum seekers in the EU. The discussions will focus namely on combating violence against women refugees and asylum seekers, their situation in terms of healthcare, and measures for promoting their integration. This thematic digest contains selected publications provided by the policy departments to support committees in their work on these topics.
