European Council

The EU issued a declaration on Tunisia, taking due note of the announcement made by the President of the Republic of Tunisia on the major political milestones in 2022 and the timetable for their implementation.

The leaders of the EU institutions signed a Joint Declaration identifying key legislative priorities for 2022, and welcomed progress on the 2021 priorities.

At the end of the 6th Eastern Partnership Summit in Brussels, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stressed the new impetus given to the Partnership by an ambitious declaration.

The heads of state or government of the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the representatives of the European Union and the heads of state or government of its member states met in Brussels on 15 December 2021. During their meeting they agreed a joint declaration.

The Council and the European Parliament today reached a political provisional agreement on the revision of the trans-European energy network (TEN-E) Regulation. The objective is to modernise, decarbonise and interconnect the EU’s cross-border energy infrastructure in order to help the EU achieve its 2050 climate neutrality objectives.

European Council President Charles Michel hosted a meeting with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan. They discussed the evolving situation in the South Caucasus region and ways forward regarding EU relations with both countries.

The Council adopted conclusions on enlargement and stabilisation and association process.

Council agrees fishing opportunities for 2022

The thirteenth meeting of the Accession Conference with Serbia at Ministerial level was held on Tuesday 14 December 2021 in Brussels.

The fourteenth meeting of the Accession Conference with Montenegro at Ministerial level was held on Monday 13 December 2021 in Brussels.

The Council imposed sanctions against the Wagner Group, a Russia-based private military company, targeting the Wagner group itself, and eight individuals and three entities connected to it.

President Charles Michel of the European Council held phone calls on 19 November with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia.

The Council adopted a decision establishing a €40 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) in support of the Republic of Mozambique.

The Council approved conclusions highlighting the strategic importance of water for sustainable development, reaffirming the EU’s diplomatic engagement on water as a tool for peace, security and stability, and calling for increased emphasis on the issue of water in the EU’s external action and in the UN agendas in line with SDG 6.

The EU issued a declaration Union strongly condemning the Russian Federation’s conduct of a kinetic direct-ascent anti-satellite weapon test against its own satellite, COSMOS 1408, resulting in its destruction by a missile, as a clear act of irresponsible behaviour in outer space.

Council adopts regulation establishing joint undertakings under Horizon Europe.

The Council approved conclusions recognising the key role of EU public sector expertise as a form of international technical cooperation. Such cooperation may - among others - take the form of administrative and technical cooperation measures, as well as institution building through tools such as Twinning and TAIEX.
