Miután Kurita eredeti zászlóshajóját, az Atago nehézcirkálót az amerikai tengeralattjárók elsüllyesztették, a Yamato lett a csatahajó-kötelék zászlóshajója, és a leytei csatát ebben a minőségében harcolta végig. A Sibuyan-tengeren az ellenséges légitámadások szinte teljes egészében a Musashi ellen irányultak, a többi csatahajó alig kapott találatot. A Yamato csupán három bombatalálatot kapott, ezek közül kettő az elülső lövegtorony előtt csapódott be, és nem okozott nagy károkat. A harmadik bomba a hajó orrát találta el, és a vízvonal alatt nagy léket szakított a hajótestbe, melyen keresztül több mint 3.300 tonna víz ömlött a hajóba. (Más forrás szerint ez a bombatalálat csak a következő napon érte a hajót.)

Éjszaka a köteléknek a japánok nagy meglepetésére minden gond nélkül sikerült átkelnie a San Bernardino szoroson, és kijutni a szigetek keleti oldalára. Az amerikai Harmadik Flotta parancsnokát, William Halsey tengernagyot megtévesztette, hogy Kurita délután néhány órára visszafordult nyugat felé. Azt hitte, a japánok olyan súlyos veszteségeket szenvedtek, hogy feladták a támadást, és végleg visszavonulnak, ezért észak felé fordult, hogy megütközzön Ozawa tengernagy anyahajóival, melyeknek valójában éppen az volt a feladatuk, hogy elcsalják a Harmadik Flottát a partraszállás közeléből. Beosztott tisztjei tiltakozása ellenére Halsey a teljes flottájával elvonult Leytétől, és a San Bernardino szoros őrizetére semmit nem hagyott hátra. A japánok így minden akadály nélkül kijutottak a szigetek közül, és megindultak délnek, a leytei partraszállás helyszíne felé.
