On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights stated:
"Today we pay tribute to the strength and resilience of all those men, women and children who have been forced to flee their homes because of violence, persecution, war and natural disasters. I am shocked by the levels of displacement currently on record. Around 65.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes..."
The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss international trends as regards the concept of universal jurisdiction, the EU's approach to promoting universal jurisdiction through its external relations and concrete experiences in EU Member States.

Reiterating the EU's long-standing opposition to the death penalty, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), stated:
"I condemn in the strongest terms the execution of Mr Yavar Mohammad Salas, Gonabadi dervish, in Iran yesterday. He was sentenced to imprisonment and execution on murder charges and his sentence was later upheld by the Supreme Court. Numerous legal and procedural violations occurred during the pre-trial and trial process..."
