The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Wednesday 18 March from 09.00 to 12.30 and from 14.30 to 18.30 and on Thursday 19 March from 09.00 - 12.30, room A3G-3.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Hearings - Authoritarianism and shrinking space for freedom of expression - 18-02-2020 - Subcommittee on Human Rights

Public hearing on authoritarianism and shrinking space for freedom of expression, press freedom and human rights defenders, with case studies on China, Egypt and Russia
This hearing will examine the state of international law on freedom of thought, conscience and religion and study lessons learned from past policies and actions that have contributed towards its protection. Participants will also discuss best practices of interreligious dialogue for promoting tolerance and fighting against discrimination based on religious motivations. The EU must continue its efforts to protect freedom of thought, conscience and religion, without fostering a particular belief, both inside and outside its borders.

Publications - Statement on the detention of Guillermo Fariñas - Subcommittee on Human Rights

In light of the detention of Sakharov Prize laureate Guillermo Fariñas in Cuba, Parliament Vice-President Heidi Hautala and the Chair of the Human Rights Subcommittee Maria Arena stated: "We learned with deep consternation that the Cuban authorities have arrested 2010 Sakharov Prize laureate Guillermo Fariñas and are detaining him in an unknown location. He was preparing to come to Brussels, invited by the European Parliament, to participate in a meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights.



We urge the Cuban authorities to ensure Guillermo Fariñas' fundamental rights and allow him to travel to Europe."

Following the International Court of Justices' decision to order Myanmar to take all measures in its power to protect the Rohingya minority from genocide, Maria Arena stated: "Thousands of Rohingya people have been killed or subjected to horrific violence over the past years. This decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) underscores the paramount importance of guaranteeing universal and equal enjoyment of human rights, with special attention to the most vulnerable...."
