In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions together with urgent matters in the field of human rights and democracy, are continued.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Thursday 25 February from 09.00 - 12.00 and from 13.45 - 15.45 via videoconference.

Highlights - Exchange of views on the new EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime - Subcommittee on Human Rights

On 27 January, 13:45 to 14:45, DROI will hold an exchange of views on the new EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, in the presence of three experts. The experts’ interventions will include a general assessment of the new instrument in the EU’s Human Rights toolbox, the possibilities for involvement and oversight by the civil society actors and a US perspective, including possibilities for new synergies under the Biden administration. A Q&A session with the Members will follow.

Highlights - Exchange of views on the loss of value of democracy and growing authoritarianism - Subcommittee on Human Rights

DROI will hold a first exchange of views on democracy, beginning with the loss of faith in democracy and growing authoritarianism. Donatella della Porta from Scuola Normale Superiore and Yascha Mounk from Johns Hopkins University will introduce this problem, its symptoms and root causes. The next meetings will provide the platform for experts from countries defending different visions of democracy to discuss their viewpoints, giving Members an opportunity to analyse their reasons and arguments.
