Le 12 décembre, la Chine a saisi l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) pour protester contre la méthode dite du pays de substitution utilisée par les Etats-Unis et par l'Union européenne pour calculer les mesures anti-dumping appliquées aux exportations chinoises.

Selon les données publiées par Eurostat le 16 décembre, le taux d'inflation annuel de l'Union européenne et celui de la zone euro se sont établis à 0,6% en novembre 2016, contre 0,5% en octobre.

D'après les estimations d'Eurostat publiées le 16 décembre, en octobre 2016, la zone euro a enregistré un excédent commercial de 20.1 milliards € et l'Union européenne un excédent de 2,7 milliards €..

Jusqu'au 26 février 2017 se tient à Charlottenlund au Danemark l'exposition "L.A. Ring between light and darkness" consacrée à l'oeuvre du peintre réaliste danois L.A. Ring et aux travaux de sa femme, Sigrid Kähler.

Jusqu'au 12 mars 2017 se tient au Castello Sforzesco à Milan, en Italie, une exposition sur l'artiste photographe italien Paolo Monti.

Jusqu'au 4 janvier 2017, une exposition sur des créations en pain d'épice est présentée à la Design and Architecture Gallery Parnü de Tallinn, en Estonie.

Du 19 décembre 2016 au 23 avril 2017, le Southbank Centre à Londres organise une exposition autour de l'artiste finlandaise Tove Jansson et ses créations, les Moumines.

Jusqu'au 27 février 2017 se tient à Riga, en Lettonie, une exposition de bijoux intitulée "Magical tale in grandfather's beard". Présentée à la galerie Putti, celle-ci expose les créations d'artistes européens et internationaux.

Le nouveau musée du Parfum, situé au 73 faubourg Saint-Honoré, à Paris au coeur du quartier de la mode et du luxe, ouvre ses portes le 22 décembre. L'institution se veut scientifique, créative et ouverte au grand public.

A partir du 20 décembre se tient l'exposition "Schätze aus dem Rhein. Der Barbarenschatz von Neupotz" au Musée de la pré- et de la protohistoire de Berlin. Elle sera consacrée à un ensemble d'objets retrouvés au cours du temps dans le Rhin.

Ein Jahr nachdem die große Flüchtlingsbewegung Europa erreichte, lassen sich in Dänemark, Finnland, Norwegen und Schweden nachhaltige Veränderungen feststellen. Mit einer Online-Community-Befragung untersuchte die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung im November 2015 die politischen Einstellungen von Personen mit Affinität zu Verschwörungstheorien. Ihr Medienverhalten ist von starkem Misstrauen und dem Glauben geprägt, gegen Manipulationen immun zu sein. Eine grundsätzliche Ablehnung der Demokratie als politisches System ist unter den befragten Verschwörungstheoretikern nicht verbreitet. Ihre Kritik richtet sich vielmehr an die konkrete Umsetzung der Demokratie im Allgemeinen und die Politiker im Speziellen.

Nachdem Kolumbiens Ringen um einen Friedensschluss zwischen Regierung und der Guerilla FARC durch die Ablehnung der Friedensvereinbarung vom 24. August 2016 zwischen Regierung und FARC in einer Volksabstimmung einen herben Rückschlag erlitten hatte, ist 53 Tage danach ein überarbeitetes Abkommen unterzeichnet worden.

The International Peace Institute (IPI) held a thronged farewell reception on December 15, 2016 for outgoing Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who responded by saying, “Even though I am leaving, my heart will never leave the United Nations. I will always be with you.”

Mr. Ban took the occasion to praise his successor, Secretary-General–designate António Guterres, also an honored guest at the IPI event, as someone particularly well equipped for the job. He said he had been reviewing the careers of some past secretaries-general and reasoned that Mr. Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, would be beginning with a distinct earned advantage.

“I was a complete outsider when I came here, a complete outsider,” Mr. Ban said. “Kofi Annan has been the complete insider. Guterres is a complete outsider, but he has longer than 10 years’ experience inside the UN. It would be very difficult to find someone who is combining both the qualities of insider and outsider.”

Consequently, he predicted, “he will be able to deliver.”

He also lauded the manner in which Mr. Guterres had been selected. “For the first time in UN history, we had an open SG process,” he noted. His reference was to the requirements for formal nominations, mission statements and open hearings in the General Assembly that were instituted this year. As a result, Mr. Ban said, the Security Council was able to make “the best choice” for the new secretary-general.

With Mr. Guterres standing by his side, Mr. Ban said he had profited from advice and critiques from IPI and other close observers of the UN and urged the crowd to “please make him accountable. He said that by the end of his term, there will be 50% gender parity. Please make sure that he is able to deliver what you really want.”

Saying he was particularly aggrieved at not having been able to secure peace in the Middle East, he told Mr. Guterres, “I’m certain I’m leaving this Middle East peace process, I hope I’m not giving you too much homework.”

In opening remarks, IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen introduced Mr. Ban as “a man who is humble, gracious, patient, and thoughtful, and who has committed his life to public service and who truly believes that no one should be left behind.”

He singled out his achievements like the adoption of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development—“a historic agenda that integrates the three founding pillars of the UN: peace and security, human rights and development”—his “tireless” effort to put climate change at the forefront of the global agenda, resulting in the historic Paris Agreement, and his “receptiveness to new ideas for change and his openness to thoughtful analysis.”

“Thank you,” Mr. Rød- Larsen concluded, for “having taken on ‘the most difficult job in the world’ and for being a symbol of hope to people across the globe.”

The IPI President also thanked Mr. Ban for having served for the past 10 years as the honorary chair of IPI and announced that Mr. Guterres would succeed him in that role.
