Europäische Union

Democracies in Europe can be organised in many different ways, but there are limits that must be safeguarded whatever the circumstances. While governments have a responsibility to uphold fundamental values, so do newcomers to our societies. Bert Koenders, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, addressed these issues in his opening speech at a seminar on the rule of law in Strasbourg, organised for the Council of Europe by the Netherlands’ EU Presidency.

The very first informal meeting of EU trade ministers and ministers for development cooperation took place during the Netherlands Presidency.

On 25 and 26 January, European companies, civil society organisations and public authorities gathered at the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, where they discussed the opportunities for and obstacles to the circular economy in Europe. Click here to watch a summary of the meeting.

Nombreux sont les domaines dans lesquels des recommandations ont été formulées à l’issue de la réunion sur l’économie circulaire, qui s’est tenue à Rotterdam les 25 et 26 janvier derniers et qui a permis à des représentants des entreprises, des organisations de la société civile et des pouvoirs publics d’évoquer ensemble les opportunités et les...

Sustainable procurement, financial incentives, recycling materials and sharing best practices. This is just a handful of the topics discussed at a conference on opportunities for and obstacles to a European circular economy in Rotterdam on 25 and 26 January. The meeting ‘Unwrapping the package: towards a circular economy in Europe’ was co-hosted by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and the European Commission and resulted in several concrete agreements and recommendations.

On 28 January, in the context of AFET's discussion of the discharge of the European Commission and the European External Action Service, AFET Chair Brok emphasised the special nature of the EU's aid spending. Given its objectives of alleviating poverty and contributing to peace and stability in crisis-struck regions, he noted that the EU's aid activities often need to take bigger risks in extremely difficult environments than is the case with other categories of EU funding.
He stated that it is therefore vital to keep these particular circumstances in mind when judging the success or failure of the EU's activities abroad. He emphasised that recent misrepresentations of the EU's activities in the media of some member states have caused enormous damage to the EU's efforts and stressed the need for Parliament to be absolutely clear in its recognition of the special circumstances of the EU's spending on its global activities.

During a conference on the European budget on 28 January 2016, important steps were taken towards the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU’s long-term budget. The Dutch Minister of Finance, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, summarised the conference results in a speech at the end of the day. Read the full speech here
