This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It is a milestone document which over the decades has inspired a rich body of legally binding international human rights treaties.

The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU's policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew this unshakeable commitment to the subject, the European Parliament held a High Level Conference to reflect on the core principles of human rights as set out in the UDHR: universality, inter-dependence and indivisibility, while at the same time addressing new challenges in a global and digital world

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani opened the conference in the presence of Vice President/High Representative Federica Mogherini, United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, General Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda, and several other dignitaries.

The European Parliament will hold a Human Rights Week, which will take place from 19 to 23 November 2018 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948.
Within this framework, on 20 November in the morning, Members of the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) will meet with members of national parliaments of the EU Member States to discuss experiences at national level as well as strategic action and ideas for the way forward at European level. The discussions will be based on three thematic sessions: "Mainstreaming human rights into external action", "Business and Human Rights" and "Sustainable development and human rights".

Eight Members of the Subcommittee on Human Rights visited Canada from 29 October to 2 November.

The Chair of the Subcommittee, Pier Antonio Panzeri, stated: "Our delegation visited Canada to have an exchange on human rights challenges and to learn more about the human rights situation of indigenous peoples (IP), notably in the light of Prime Minister Trudeau's commitment to reset the government's relationship with Canada's indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit and Metis).

"Today is a sad day. Mr Osman Kavala, a prominent and respected leading figure in Turkey's arts and culture scene has to date been detained in solitary confinement without indictment for 365 days. I am dismayed by the ongoing injustice exacted upon a man of peace, who through Anadolu Kültur, is a bridge-builder between Turks, Armenians and Kurds...."

Eight Members of the Subcommittee on Human Rights visited Canada from 29 October to 2 November. The Chair of the Subcommittee, Pier Antonio Panzeri, stated: "Our delegation visited Canada to have an exchange on human rights challenges and to learn more about the human rights situation of indigenous peoples (IP), notably in the light of Prime Minister Trudeau's commitment to reset the government's relationship with Canada's indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit and Metis).
Canada is a long standing and like-minded partner of the EU in the area of human rights. Both sides are strongly committed to multilateralism and have established a close cooperation in international fora such as the UN Human Rights Council. Our will is to further deepen this cooperation and we concluded with our Canadian counterpart, the International Human Rights Committee of the House of Commons, to establish parliamentary cooperation between our committees, including possible actions to obtain the release of the imprisoned Saudi blogger and Sakharov laureate Raif Badawi.

The Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an Interparliamentary Committee Meeting on 20.11.18, on the human rights dimension of EU external policies and those of Member States. The discussions will focus on mainstreaming human rights into external action, and on business and human rights. The Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, will speak about sustainable development and human rights. This Thematic Digest contains publications from the Policy Departments on these issues.
