Carnegie Europe launched a debate in the aftermath of the failed coup in Turkey. Director General of ELIAMEP Dr Thanos Dokos was among the interviewees by Judy Dempsey. His comment was the following:

‘Turkish democracy during the rule of the Kemalist establishment has been imperfect at best. The early years of rule by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) raised hopes for substantial and irreversible progress in the fields of liberal democracy, the rule of law, and protection of human rights. Unfortunately, all such hopes have been erased by the last few years of increasingly autocratic governance by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Economic development, the skillful exploitation of religious fervor among the less privileged groups in Turkish society, and a weak, rather discredited opposition have allowed Erdoğan to comfortably win successive elections and remain the master of the political game in Turkey for the past fifteen years.

The cost, however, has been a deep polarization and division of Turkish society along pro-Islamic vs. secular fault lines. If Erdoğan’s first post-coup actions are any guide to the future, that division will deepen even further as he will try to cleanse the state mechanism of real and imaginary enemies and consolidate power by transforming Turkey into a presidential republic. Unless moderate forces in the AKP can prevent this, the cost may be extremely high for Turkish democracy and society (Turks and Kurds alike), as well as for Turkey’s relations with its traditional Western allies.’

Általános : A munkanélküliség csökkentése kell, hogy legyen a második legfontosabb prioritás az EU számára a terrorizmus elleni fellépés után - véli az európaiak többsége. Az Eurobarometer felmérése azt mutatja, hogy a magyarok háromnegyede szerint az Uniónak többet kell tennie a munkanélküliség csökkentéséért. Az EP foglalkoztatási szakbizottságának elnöke, Thomas Händel arra kérte az uniós vezetőket, hogy ösztönözzék a befektetéseket és tegyenek lépéseket a minőségi, fenntartható foglalkoztatásért.

Allgemeines : Die Arbeitslosenquote in der EU beträgt über 8 Prozent. Über drei Viertel der Unionsbürger sagen, dass die EU zur Bekämpfung der Arbeitslosigkeit mehr Maßnahmen setzen solle. Das ergibt eine neue Eurobarometer-Umfrage, die vom Parlament in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Der Vorsitzende des Beschäftigungsausschusses Thomas Händel (GUE/NGL) aus Deutschland betont: "Europa muss gemeinsam mehr Anstrengungen für Investitionen und gute, nachhaltige Arbeit unternehmen." Reacting to the results of the Europe-wide study, Thomas Händel, the head of Parliament’s employment committee, urged EU leaders to “endeavour to ensure investment and high-quality, sustainable employment”. Général : Alors que le taux de chômage s’élevait à plus de 8 % dans l’Union européenne en mai dernier, une majorité de citoyens souhaite une intervention accrue de l’Europe dans ce domaine, selon un récent sondage Eurobaromètre. En réaction à ces résultats, le Président de la commission parlementaire de l’emploi Thomas Händel a exhorté les dirigeants européens à « s’efforcer de garantir des emplois de qualité et durables ».

Le Secrétaire général de l'ONU, Ban Ki-moon, a condamné vendredi les récents combats survenus les 21 et 22 juillet à Kidal, au Mali, qui ont opposé deux groupes armés signataires de l'Accord pour la paix et la réconciliation au Mali.

Le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR) s'est déclaré vendredi préoccupé par le sort des milliers de réfugiés qui continuent de fuir l'incertitude et la violence au Soudan du Sud depuis la reprise des combats, début juillet, entre les partisans du Président Salva Kiir et ceux du Premier Vice-Président Riek Machar.

Le Secrétaire général des Nations Unies, Ban Ki-moon, a annoncé vendredi la nomination de Fabrizio Hochschild, du Chili, en tant que son nouveau Représentant spécial adjoint auprès de la Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République centrafricaine (MINUSCA).

Le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU a adopté vendredi une résolution autorisant les Etats membres à acquérir, transporter et détruire les armes chimiques recensées en Libye afin de garantir leur élimination dans les meilleurs délais et conditions de sécurité.

La Représentante spéciale du Secrétaire général des Nations Unies pour le sort des enfants en temps de conflit armé, Leila Zerrougui, a conclu une visite de six jours en Somalie en appelant les autorités du pays à traiter les anciens enfants soldats non comme des criminels, mais comme des victimes ayant besoin de protection et d'aide à la réinsertion.

Le Bureau de la coordination des affaires humanitaires (OCHA) a annoncé vendredi avoir livré un total de 31 tonnes de nourriture et des articles non alimentaires à environ 15.000 personnes déplacées par le groupe terroriste Boko Haram à Banki, dans l'Etat de Borno, au nord du Nigeria.
