Nowadays Islamic finance is gradually becoming an important part of the international financial system. During the ongoing financial crisis, the role of Islamic finance for the stabilisation of the international financial system appears to be strong and promising due to its ethical principles and religious foundation. This analysis focuses both on the quantitative and qualitative examples of the economic upheaval in the Eurozone and Greece and explores the prospects of introducing and developing possible prospects of Islamic finance in the Greek economy.

You can read here the article containing ten proposals for a better management of the refugee crisis, which was written by Director General of ELIAMEP Dr Thanos Dokos. This commentary was published in the Greek daily Kathimerini on 20 April 2016 [in Greek].

Dr Theodore Tsakiris, Assistant Professor at the University of Nicosia and Co-ordinator of the Programme: ‘Geopolitics of Energy’ at ELIAMEP wrote working paper 71/2016  in which he deals with the day after in Iran following the lift of sanctions. In particular, he focuses on the impact at the economic and geostrategic level.

Research Fellow of ECFR and ELIAMEP Dr Angeliki Dimitriadi participated in a CEPS study titled: Irregular Migration, Trafficking and Smuggling of Human Beings: Policy Dilemmas in the EU with a chapter on the interrelationship between trafficking and irregular migration. The study is available here.

This paper deals with the phenomenon of right-wing extremism and focuses on the examination of systemic and anti-systemic elements in the political discourse of the Greek far-right party Golden Dawn. More specifically, the research question this paper addresses is: under what conditions the political discourse of right-wing parties changes. Although several researchers maintain that the political discourse of right-wing parties remains stable through time, others support the view that the entrance of these parties into Parliament signals a change in their rhetoric, which tends to a movement towards the center. My hypothesis is that the political discourse of right-wing extremist parties changes on becoming actively involved in the political system. To test my hypothesis, I used methodological tools that rely on quantitative content analysis, and, more specifically, on the creation of a codified framework that is based on material extracted from a variety of contexts in which the party’s political discourse is expressed. Focusing on a quantitative analysis of empirical data (statistical analysis), this paper attempts to trace qualitative variation and possible rifts in right-wing radical political discourse.

Working Paper 73/2016: «The Political Discourse of Golden Dawn, 2009-2015 Systemicity and Antisystemicity»

COP21 in Paris sparked a glimmer of hope that perhaps nations were finally ready to take on the climate crisis. The message of optimism now requires concrete action and steadfast commitment to a process that raises a number of crucial challenges: technological, political, social and economic. Who will lead after COP21? As the crisis continues to grow, new robust leadership is imperative. This paper discusses why a close collaboration between the EU and China may result in the necessary push to solidify a concrete vision and a roadmap for our common future in the Anthropocene.

Working Paper 72/2016: «EU and China: Leadership after COP21»

Research and innovation are important instruments for the development, particularly through international cooperation. During the last five years, Greece is facing a very acute problem of brain drain. Policies for retaining the highly skilled are imperative; equally imperative is policy planning for capitalising on highly skilled Greeks already abroad. The first proposal of this working paper is about the integration of research and innovation into the political planning of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs; further development of international cooperation schemes will be beneficial for the Greek research community. The second proposal is about establishing a Diaspora Knowledge Network, in order to capitalise on the Greek scientific diaspora. Good practices of other states are adjusted to Greek needs, with the aim of facilitating sustainable and efficient brain circulation and benefiting all stakeholders. In this way, Greek scientists and researchers abroad will be able to connect with the Greek research and innovation ecosystem, either directly, or through international cooperation with their institutions. The purpose will be to increase investments in research and innovation and the efficient use of NSRF/EU funds.

Policy Paper No. 25: The international cooperation in research and innovation  with the support of the Greek Diaspora: Transforming ‘brain drain’ into ‘brain gain‘

ELIAMEP White Book on Greek Foreign Policy, Defence and Security is now available by I. Sideris Publications. It is edited by Director General of ELIAMEP Dr Thanos Dokos and aims at constituting a high-level strategy textbook by outlining objectives of the Greek national strategy and  defining partners and regions of high interest. In this context, relations of Greece with the EU and important countries are analysed while attention is also paid to the institutional framework of Greek foreign policy.

The main objectives of ELIAMEP White Book on Greek Foreign Policy, Defence and Security are:

• to outline the dominant tendencies and security challenges in the 21st century
• to present current dilemmas and future opportunities for Greek foreign policy, defence and security
• to make realistic policy recommendations to achieve already set goals

The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy , the Institute of International Economic Relations, the Institute of International Relations, the Department of Political Sciences and International Relations of the University of Peloponnese and the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean coorganised a public debate ‘The New Silk Road of Chinα, One Belt One Road (OBOR) and Greece’.  The debate took place on Wednesday 30 March 2016, at 11:30, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Auditorium G. Kranidiotis).

The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) organized on 22 March 2016 a roundtable discussion with Mr. Ditmir Bushati, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Albania, on the theme of: “The role of Albanian – Greek relations in a challenging European context”.

Comments were made by Mr. Alexandros Mallias, Ambassador (ad hon); the discussion was moderated by Dr. Thanos Dokos, Director General, ELIAMEP.

The discussion was held at the premises of the European Commission Representation in Greece, with the participation of researchers, diplomats, and journalists.

Research Fellow of ELIAMEP Dr Filippa Chatzistavrou and Director of XERFI Olivier Passet wrote a paper for German Council on Foreign Relations (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Auswaertige Politik (DGAP) on the role of France during the Greek crisis. This paper is available here.

Dr. Thanos Dokos, Director General of ELIAMEP, contributed in the study ‘Defence Budgets and Cooperation in Europe: Developments, Trends and Drivers’. The study was produced in the framework of the project ‘Permanent Monitoring and Analysis of military capabilities and defence sector trends’, managed by a consortium of European think tanks, including ELIAMEP, and funded by the European Defence Agency (EDA).

The Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC) issued a joint paper proposing measures to better deal with the refugee crisis. This paper is available here.

The 18th issue of the Middle East-Mediterranean Report deals with the re-integration of non-Muslim societies in the Turkish society. In particular, it explores the role of social media and their impact on multiculturalism.

Director General of ELIAMEP Dr Thanos Dokos wrote an article in Journal of International Politics and Society (Internationale Politik und Gesellschaft Journal) analysing the refugee crisis and presenting five proposals for an effiicent management of the problem. The article is available here.
