Trotz anhaltender Bürgerproteste will die EU das Handelsabkommen Ceta mit Kanada in fünf Wochen beschließen. In der deutschen Agrarindustrie sind die Meinungen zu Ceta geteilt: Während größere Betriebe mit Vorteilen rechnen, befürchten vor allem kleinere Höfe die atlantische Konkurrenz.

MEPs’ plans to tighten up EU car “type approval” rules, in the wake of the VW scandal, were discussed in the Internal Market Committee on Thursday. These include stricter supervision of tests done before a car can be placed on the market and more stringent obligations on EU member states to check that those already on the road meet all EU safety, environmental and production requirements.

Allgemeines : Das EU-Parlament möchte, dass die EU das Pariser Klimaabkommen so rasch wie möglich ratifiziert, um sicherzustellen, dass dieses baldigst in Kraft tritt. 195 Länder hatten sich im Dezember 2015 auf der UN-Klimaschutzkonferenz (COP21) in Paris erstmals auf ein allgemeines, rechtsverbindliches weltweites Klimaschutzübereinkommen geeinigt. Wir haben mit dem Vorsitzenden des Umweltausschusses Giovanni La Via (EVP, IT) über das Engagement des Parlaments und künftige Herausforderungen gesprochen.

In Belgien haben die Gewerkschaften zu Demonstrationen gegen geplante oder bereits umgesetzte Reformen des Arbeitsrechts aufgerufen.

Budget Committee MEPs reversed all the cuts proposed by the Council to the draft 2017 EU budget to meet the needs of the migration crisis and slow economic growth, in a vote on Wednesday. They also boosted funding to fight youth unemployment and increased spending on research and infrastructure projects. The full plenary will vote on 26 October on a proposed budget amounting to €161.8bn in commitments, €4.13bn more than the original Commission proposal.

Allgemeines : Am Dienstag (27.9.), am Vortag des Todes des ehemaligen israelischen Präsidenten Schimon Peres, kamen EU-Abgeordnete und Vertreter der europäischen jüdischen Gemeinschaften im Parlament zusammen, um über Antisemitismus und die Perspektiven für die Zukunft der Juden in Europa zu debattieren. Parlamentspräsident Schulz betonte: "Jüdische Freunde und Nachbarn, wir stehen mit Ihnen zusammen gegenüber denjenigen, die Hass verbreiten. Europa ist nicht Europa ohne seine Juden. Europa ist Ihr Zuhause!"
